Borussia Dortmund were thirteen points adrift from the top of the Bundesliga table at the end of the 2019-20 season. Given the way Bayern Munich is playing football under Hansi Flick, it seems like a difficult gap to overcome in the 2020-21 campaign as well. Bayern won the coveted treble last season and it seems like the beginning of something extraordinary under Flick.
With the new Bundesliga season starting from September 19, the key question that arises is are there enough clubs in the league to stop Bayern Munich from lifting their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title? Let’s find out.
Arguably the second-best team of Germany, they lacked the consistency last season that is needed to win the Bundesliga. It seems like they have retained the services of Jadon Sancho and he could be the key for the team to close the gap to Bayern. Added to this, they have the most feared young striker in Europe, Erling Haaland in their team. This will be his first full season with Dortmund. After joining the team in January, Haaland scored 13 goals in just 15 matches and he’ll be eyeing to topple Robert Lewandowski as the highest goalscorer in 2020-21.
With Marco Reus also coming back from injury, and Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard hitting their peak form, the Dortmund attack will prove to be too lethal for any defence on a given day. They have added another young English player, Jude Bellingham to their team and at 17, he already looks the real deal. This could be the year Dortmund could really challenge Bayern for the Bundesliga title and stop their winning streak.
Under coach Julian Nagelsmann, Leipzig seems on the right track and is going places. The run to the Champions League semi-final will help the team mature and get to that next level. They finished third in the league last season and they can surely improve on that in the coming season. However, they will be without their talisman Timo Werner who has joined Premier League club, Chelsea and it’ll be quite difficult to find a player who can have the same impact on the team when it comes to goalscoring.
They have brought in Hwang Hee-Chan from RB Salzburg and Nagelsmann will be hoping he gets up and running for the new season quickly. Marcel Sabitzer will be the main man for the team and the winger’s ability to score crucial goals will help them. Dayot Upamecano has attracted a lot of interest from the top clubs of Europe. It’ll be imperative for Leipzig to keep the centre-back at the club if they are to be considered as title contenders.
Borussia Monchengladbach had a fantastic 2019-20 season, leading the pack for much of the early part of the season. On the final day, they edged out Bayer Leverkusen for that fourth Champions League berth.
The team has some great attacking talent in their ranks with the likes of Alassane Plea, Marcus Thuram and Breel Embolo. The trio offers an electric front-line and had scored 28 goals between them last season. They finished just four points behind Dortmund in the table last season and will look to close that gap this time around.
Bayer Leverkusen missed out on Champions League football for this season on the very last day of the league. It’ll be disappointing for a club who have great ambitions. The pundits expect 2020-21 to be a difficult season for Leverkusen with the departure of their best player Kai Havertz to Chelsea and Kevin Volland to AS Monaco.
The team have roped in centre-forward Patrick Schick from AS Roma who played the last season on loan for RB Leipzig. He scored 10 goals in the Bundesliga last season and will look to improve on it in the upcoming season. The priority will be to finish in the Champions League spot for the club but if they go on an incredible run, then who knows, maybe they can build up a fight for the league title.
