Finally, the January transfer window is over and unlike the usually quiet winter window, this year, we saw plenty of money being splashed around. Juventus spent nearly 90 million on Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic which made him the most expensive player from the 2022 winter window. Along with Vlahovic, four other players attracted big bids.
Here are the top five most expensive players from the 2022 January transfer window.
DUSAN VLAHOVIC
Price: 90 Million
Move: Fiorentina to Juventus
The Old Lady from Italy, Juventus were the ones who broke their vault and roped in 22-year-old Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina. The striker has 17 goals in 21 Serie A appearances this season and will now carry the burden of firing Juventus back to the top of Italian football. He will take up the famous number seven jersey at Turin which was last worn by Cristiano Ronaldo.
FERRAN TORRES
Price: 60.5 Million
Move: Manchester City to FC Barcelona
After just one-and-a-half seasons in England, Barcelona came calling and Ferran Torres returned to La Liga. He failed to make it as a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium and seems like Barcelona’s manager Xavi fancies the Spanish forward. He will take up the number 19 jersey at the Catalan club which was supposed to be worn by another City player Sergio Aguero but unfortunately, he had to retire from the sport before making his official debut for Barcelona.
LUIS DIAZ
Price: 49.5 Million
Move: FC Porto to Liverpool
Just before Liverpool’s Sporting Director Michael Edwards was about to leave his position, he delivered yet another masterclass in the transfer window. Liverpool fans are overjoyed with this going away gift from Edwards as they brought in Luis Diaz from Porto. Seems like fellow English club Tottenham Hotspur had been tracking Diaz for quite some time and even got the negotiations finalised when Liverpool swooped in at the last hour and hijacked the deal. Diaz’s signing gives Liverpool the much-needed squad depth to fight for all trophies this season.
BRUNO GUIMARÃES
Price: 46 Million
Move: Olympique Lyon to Newcastle United
Newcastle were always going to be big spenders this transfer window in their pursuit of staying alive in the Premier League and they spent more than 46 million on Brazilian playmaker Bruno Guimaraes from French club Lyon. The 24-year-old midfielder, who clinched Olympic gold at Tokyo 2022 will be someone Eddie Howe would be banking on to get the creative spark in the team. He became the club’s most expensive transfer ever, a record that could be broken in the coming few windows, provided they stay in the top-flight.
LUCAS DIGNE
Price: 33 Million
Move: Everton FC to Aston Villa
It was surprising that Everton agreed to sell Lucas Digne to a club like Aston Villa who are in a similar position to them in the Premier League. It became apparent that Lucas Digne fell off with former Everton coach Rafa Benitez but it was shocking to see the Merseyside club sanction the sale of Digne when they were on the verge of sacking Benitez. The 28-year-old left-back revealed that he made his way to Aston Villa for manager Steven Gerrard and has already had a solid start at the Birmingham club.
