The race for the Golden Glove award, given to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets, is getting hotter as we move towards the business end of the Premier League 2020-21 season. In this campaign, the frontrunners for the prize have brought a major difference to respective teams’ fortunes by keeping clean sheets and stopping the opposition from scoring any goals.
Here, we take a look at the five names that are competing to get the top goalkeeping honours and etch their name in history books at the end of GameWeek 26.
5. NICK POPE
Stats: Nine clean sheets
Burnley’s shot-stopper Nick Pope has kept nine clean sheets in 26 matches, making 98 saves in this Premier League. It’s the 28-year-old’s splendid saves that have kept the Clarets out of the relegation scrap. Pope’s brilliance at Turf Moor has even earned him four national caps and made him a sought-after goalkeeper in English football, with interests from Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham United.
4. DAVID DE GEA
Club: Manchester United
Stats: Nine clean sheets
David de Gea’s clean sheet record of nine in 24 appearances does not tell the true story of his performance this season. The Manchester United number one’s showings, unlike his previous campaigns, have been far from satisfactory. The Spaniard has been sloppy in the goal, having already conceded 29 times but has produced commanding displays against the big teams. Five of his nine clean sheets have come against the Big Six. He, however, faces stiff competition from Dean Henderson as the first-choice custodian for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, something that is sure to keep him on his toes going forward.
3. EDOUARD MENDY
Club: Chelsea FC
Stats: 12 clean sheets
Chelsea FC shot-stopper Edouard Mendy, who joined the Blues from Rennes this season, quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper for previous manager, Frank Lampard, and has continued to find a spot in the starting 11 under Thomas Tuchel as well. The 29-year-old Senegalese custodian has shown great resilience under the post, conceding only 16 goals. Mendy has secured 12 shut-outs in 22 matches for Chelsea this campaign.
2. EMILIANO MARTINEZ
Club: Aston Villa
Stats: 13 clean sheets
From being the second-choice ‘keeper at Arsenal to being one of the first picks at Aston Villa, Emiliano Martinez has finally been able to display his full strength. The Argentine joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in September 2020 and has since displayed exceptional keeping skills, stopping the opposition from scoring in 13 out of his 25 appearances. The Villans are currently the third-best defensive team in the league this season and a lot of the credit can be given to Martinez’s stellar work between the sticks.
1. EDERSON SANTANA DE MORAES
Club: Manchester City
Stats: 15 clean sheets
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes is on track to defend his Golden Glove award and better his previous season’s tally of clean sheets. He has already kept 15 shut-outs in 26 matches in this Premier League. However, we also need to factor in the tight defence of City that has helped the Brazilian rack up clean sheets, game after game. Ederson has conceded only 15 times this season.
