With the 2020-21 season of the Premier League entering its final stages, the race for the Golden Boot is heating up. The competition for the award was always going to be tight, given the talent that Premier League clubs have in their players – and there are multiple contenders for this year’s award.
We are taking a look at the top scorers in the current Premier League season. All of them are contenders to pick up the Golden Boot, but a late surprise entrant can never be ruled out.
#6: Jamie Vardy – 12 Goals
The winner of the 2019-20 Golden Boot award remains firmly in contention for a repeat this season with his spectacular form.
The 34-year-old is relentless in his pursuit of goals as he scored 12 goals and five assists in just 20 appearances for the team, including a hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
His exploits have enabled Leicester to remain a firm challenger to the established teams throughout the season and they currently sit at the third spot in the table.
#6: Patrick Bamford – 12 Goals
Patrick Bamford has been a goal-slayer under Marcelo Bielsa this season. The Leeds striker has put all doubts to rest about his move to the newly-promoted side and has secured their spot in the Premier League.
The centre-forward’s transformation is credited to the coaching of Bielsa and his suitability to the 4-1-4-1 formation that Leeds deploy.
Bamford has scored 12 goals and provided five assists in the season, adding to the aggressive style of play Leeds have brought to the Premier League.
#3: Dominic Calvert Lewin – 13 Goals
Everton’s Dominic Calvert Lewin has been in excellent form this season as he has scored 18 goals for his team across all competitions.
This includes 13 goals in just 20 matches that he played in the Premier League – the fewest among the contenders for the Golden Boot so far.
The Englishman’s feats have kept Everton hovering in the top half of the League table and they are in contention for a Europa League spot.
#3: Heung Min Son and Harry Kane – 13 Goals each
Along with his counterpart Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son has become one of the most clinical goalscorers in the Premier League.
The South Korean has scored 13 goals in 23 appearances for the team with six assists to his name. He also has the highest shot accuracy among the contenders in this list at 74%.
Tottenham Hotspur’s other leading goal-scorer this season is the English hero Harry Kane, who won the Golden Boot award consecutively for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
The Englishman is known for his spectacular ability link play. Apart from scoring 13 goals in 21 appearances, he also made 11 assists – the highest in the League.
The deadly-duo has scored well for Spurs, but lately they have been unable to convert goals into victories. They languish at the ninth spot in the League and their hopes of a revival under Jose Mourinho are fast fading away.
#2: Bruno Fernandes – 14 Goals
More than any other player in the League, the arrival of Bruno Fernandes to Old Trafford had a positive impact on the team’s fortunes.
Being the only midfielder in this list, Fernandes has completely dominated the field for United, placing the Red Devils back in contention for the title.
He is the club’s top scorer, netting the ball 14 times and providing nine assists. The comeback season for the Red Devils has been rightly termed ‘The Bruno Show.’
#1: Mohammed Salah – 17 Goals
He is the two-time winner of the Golden Boot and is arguably the most influential Liverpool player of his generation as Mohammed Salah continues to be the favourite for the title of the Golden Boot this season.
Salah sits comfortably ahead of the pack with 17 goals and three assists from 23 appearances for The Reds.
But despite his strong individual performance, Jurgen Klopp’s side has been unable to convert goals into victories like Tottenham, as their title defence looks more or less over at this point.
