Erling Haaland has forced us all to think about the Premier League’s Golden Boot race after just seven matches into the season. Usually, the pondering of the golden boot does not happen before the winter break, when the teams have played a little over 15 matches. However, the sheer pace with which Haaland is outperforming other forwards in the league is bewildering.
Here we discuss the 2022/23 season’s Golden Boot race which features some of the top strikers in the league competing against the Norwegian brute.
Erling Haaland – 11 goals
Heading into matchweek 9, Erling Haaland stands tall as the leading marksman of the league with a staggering 11 goals in seven matches. Haaland has now scored 14 goals for Manchester City across all competitions, as he continues to decimate his opponents regardless of the competition. The 22-year-old has outperformed the likes of Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Andrew Cole and even Thierry Henry in scoring his first 10 PL goals. He is now projected to break the record for most Premier League goals in a season.
With a difference of five goals from the second-best marksman, it is highly unlikely that Haaland will lag in the golden boot race unless he faces an injury. Manchester City’s title defence surely is in safe hands with their star summer signing leading the goal-scoring department.
Harry Kane – 6 goals
Here’s a familiar name in the goalscorer’s list. Harry Kane, captain of the England national team, has scored six goals in the first seven matches of the season. One of Premier League’s most prolific strikers with three golden boots to showcase, Kane got off to a decent start to his 2022/23 season. Tottenham’s primary source of goals will once again be competing against the league’s best for the top marksman’s award.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – 6 goals
Aleksandar Mitrovic has already owned the bragging rights for most goals in an English season when he shattered the previous record during Fulham’s spell in the EFL Championship. Playing for a team that has higher chances of relegation than winning, the Serbian veteran has been relentless so far in the Premier League with six goals in seven matches. He is tied with Tottenham’s Harry Kane in the rankings. The Cottagers rely on the 28-year-old for their goals as he continues to deliver against England’s best.
Ivan Toney – 5 goals
Ivan Toney’s brilliance in this season earned him his first international call-up. Toney was Brentford’s top goalscorer last season, scoring 12 all season. This year, he has already bagged five goals in the opening seven fixtures for Brentford as he continues to be their leading marksman.
Toney was rumoured to represent Jamaica ahead of the 2022 World Cup. However, despite all rumours, Toney rejected Jamaica’s call and decided to fight for a place in England’s squad. His perseverance resulted in him finally getting his maiden international call-up for the Lions for the UEFA Nations League.
Gabriel Jesus – 4 goals
Summer signing Gabriel Jesus has had an impressive start to his Arsenal career. After an emphatic pre-season, Jesus has scored four goals for the Gunners. The four-time Premier League winner, who fell out of favour at Manchester City, made the switch to the Emirates to play under his former assistant coach Mikel Arteta. So far, he has made a positive impact in goal contributions as Arsenal stay on top of the league.
Although, for Jesus to match the levels of other strikers, he must score goals regularly on each matchday. This season can be his maiden chance to prove to his former gaffer that he was wrong to let him go.
