The Premier League has returned following the international break with plenty of drama and excitement. The return of Cristiano Ronaldo who left as a boy prince and has now returned as a legend to Old Trafford was the pivotal story from previous weekend. He helped himself to a brace of goals against Newcastle United to mark the momentous occasion and all eyes will be on him.
Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool also recorded hard-fought wins over the weekend. Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Everton occupy the top four positions with 10 points each. Defending champions Manchester City are just below with nine points followed by Brighton and Tottenham.
Down at the bottom, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang scored Arsenal’s first goal in the Premier League in the 2021/22 season as they got on their first points on board against lowly-ranked Norwich City.
Which players are likely to make the most impact in the Premier League Gameweek 5? Let’s discuss below:
CRISTIANO RONALDO – MANCHESTER UNITED
The weekend match between Manchester United and Newcastle United was certainly emotional, overwhelming, and wholesome for the Red Devils faithful who witnessed the return of their cult hero Cristiano Ronaldo after 12 long years.
The Old Trafford was packed to the brim and bustling with joy with the great Sir Alex Ferguson in attendance and Ronaldo treated them to a delight. When the Newcastle goalkeeper failed to hold on to a tame Mason Greenwood effort during the injury time of the first half, Ronaldo was on hand to tap it home from point-blank range.
He then made a splintering run through the middle of the Newcastle defence and slotted the ball into the back of the net after finding the space between the legs of the goalkeeper. The fact that he both opened the scoring and then gave United the lead after Newcastle restored parity only heightened the emotions.
ROMELU LUKAKU – CHELSEA
Romelu Lukaku’s fantasy run of form continues in his second stint with Chelsea. The Belgian has been among the most in-form strikers in Europe over the last few years. His performance against Aston Villa last weekend showed exactly what The Blues had been missing last year and why they spent so much money on re-signing Lukaku from Inter Milan.
Since Thomas Tuchel helmed the project at Stamford Bridge last year, Chelsea had little problems in buildup and in creating moves in the final third. Finishing them, however, was a critical problem as the likes of Timo Werner, Olivier Giroud, and Tammy Abraham did little to inspire confidence.
Lukaku has already scored three goals in three matches so far, including a brace in the most recent game, earning him a place in the team of Matchweek 4. His morale will be boosted even further after watching Spurs’ abject performance against Crystal Palace where they conceded three goals!
MO SALAH – LIVERPOOL
Liverpool’s Egyptian Pharaoh has begun the Premier League season in scintillating form. He has scored three goals and has recorded two assists in the four matches already and also celebrated a milestone in the last match against Leeds United.
Salah celebrated his 100th goal in the Premier League this weekend. It took him only 162 matches to get to this milestone and he’s among the best goalscorers in Premier League history. The Egyptian began his Liverpool career with 32 goals in a single season. While he hasn’t managed to hit those dizzying heights, Salah has recorded over 20 goals in two of his three other full seasons.
Salah will be looking for the back of the net against Crystal Palace this weekend. He has six goals against them in only nine games.
BRUNO FERNANDES – MANCHESTER UNITED
Few players have had an impact as insane as Bruno Fernandes has had since he signed for Manchester United. Despite starting as a midfielder Fernandes has chalked up astounding numbers in front of goal and has a multitude of assists to his name as well. His set-piece prowess is also well known.
Against Newcastle United, Bruno Fernandes extended the party of Ronaldo’s homecoming with an outrageous strike from outside the box that fizzled into the net! He has accumulated four goals already which includes a hattrick against Leeds United in their season opener.
