After a top-half finish in their maiden Premier League campaign after 16 long years, Leeds United would be hoping to have even a better 2021-22 season. Marcelo Bielsa’s side were the entertainers in the previous edition but this time, the focus won’t just be on mere entertainment but the team would be looking at a possible European spot or a Cup run this season.
Let’s look at how Leeds United are going about their preparation for the 2021-22 season.
BUILDING UP ON THE PREVIOUS SEASON
The Peacocks finished ninth in the previous season with 59 points. In the top half, they conceded the most goals in the league and that is something Bielsa and company would look to improve in the coming season. Another thought of bother would be when they look at the defeat column. They suffered 15 defeats in the previous season with only five draws. Leeds are a hundred miles per hour team and don’t sit back even in losing conditions. They’d want to be smarter this season and fans wouldn’t mind settling for a few draws instead.
The pre-season form would be a cause of concern for The Whites. In five matches so far, the team has won only a solitary match. Pre-season hasn’t been straightforward for Leeds as their only win came against non-league opposition in Guiseley. The most alarming result came very recently as Leeds suffered a shock 4-0 defeat against Ajax. They also drew against Europa League champions Villarreal in their last preseason match ahead of the season. The team now needs to enter the first match against Manchester United with high morale and great tactics.
Leeds will be backing their stars from the previous campaign to come good again in the 2021-22 season. But at the same time, the management would be expecting new stars to emerge throughout the new campaign. Here are three players who could be key for Leeds in the upcoming season.
The ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ had a tremendous European Championship. Kalvin Phillips was amongst the best midfielders of the competition and helped his team reach the final. Phillips plays a bit of a different role in the Leeds system but he is the key who gets the team moving. Bielsa would be looking at Kalvin to distribute and dictate the play and at the same time solidify the defence. Leeds would be hoping that Kalvin could carry his remarkable form in the 2021-22 season.
‘Postman Pat’ delivered in almost every game for Leeds in the previous season. He proved his critics wrong and was on the verge of selection in the English national team. Bamford would yet again lead the line for Leeds United and a lot would be expected of him given his exploits in the previous one.
Arguably the signing of the previous season, Raphinha had a brilliant debut campaign in England. He provided the impetus in attack and contributed with both assists and goals. He is notoriously difficult to defend against and not many wing-backs would want to come one-on-one against him in the matches. Raphinha would be key to Leeds’ attack in the coming season. He’ll be expected to come good with both goals and key passes.
