Kevin de Bruyne Has Never Won a Premier League Player of the Month Award: Why?

Kevin de Bruyne isn’t short of anything to be called a Premier League legend, given his exploits with Manchester City since 2015.

A four-time Premier League champion and five-time League Cup winner, besides an FA Cup and Community Shield, Kevin de Bruyne has won everything in English football except one particular award – the Premier League Player of the Month award.

The first thought that arises upon reading this fact is, why? And so, we list two key reasons why the Belgian midfielder ‘deserves’ to end his wait for the award.

The assist wizard

Kevin de Bruyne is Manchester City’s highest assist provider in the Premier League era and is five assists away from joining the 100-assists club.

The Belgian midfielder is enjoying a fruitful partnership with Erling Haaland, widely tipped to win the Premier League Golden Boot by a significant margin given his current scoring record.

If we are to make an early prediction, Kevin de Bruyne could end the Premier League 2022-23 campaign with the second-highest assist provider of all time.

Complete player

If anything, Kevin de Bruyne is an embodiment of a team player for Manchester City.

The Belgian is mobile at making runs from the midfield when the team goes forward to score goals, and when the pressure is upon them, he is someone who doesn’t mind tracking back as a defensive cover.

Thus, as an attacker, a creator or taking up defensive duties during pressure situations in the midfield, Kevin de Bruyne has evolved into a ‘complete player’.

Final thoughts

Kevin de Bruyne is someone who constantly betters his performances with each passing month in the Premier League calendar, as seen in recent years. Perhaps this unconventional flaw has stood in his way of winning the Premier League Player of the Month award.

Also, with many of Manchester City’s players immediate candidates to win the award, it is perhaps a bit of a bias to only hand the award to players based on the numbers they stack.

Nonetheless, the 2022-23 season should be seen as the time when Kevin de Bruyne finally ends his wait for a Premier League Player of the Month honour.
