It’s not even EPL transfer frenzy yet, but the 2020-21 season of the English Premier League is turning into a blockbuster packed with several ups and downs, interspersed with protests and confusion. New-age EPL champs, Manchester City lifted the EPL trophy for the fifth time in less than a decade, their third massive conquest of the Premier League title under head coach Guardiola.
Meanwhile, the race to the top four has heated up. As things stand, Leicester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool are separated by just three points.
The 2019-20 Champions Liverpool would be looking to displace Chelsea or Leicester City from the top four in order to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Arsenal have had a woeful year and are ninth in the table while Leeds United – who were promoted to the EPL this season – displayed some impressive football under Marcelo Bielsa and find themselves 10th in the league table.
Down at the bottom, Fulham, West Brom, and Sheffield United have already been relegated.
As we inch towards the conclusion of the league, speculations regarding transfers are rife. It won’t be surprising to see many teams making major moves early in the summer.
Let’s look at some of those EPL transfer rumours and news updates.
JADON SANCHO CONFIDENT ABOUT MOVING TO OLD TRAFFORD
The Jadon Sancho saga has dragged on for the entire transfer window in 2020. Manchester United were adamant in their interest on the England starlet while Borussia Dortmund were hesitant to part with their star.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows in the Red Devils camp despite their record unbeaten streak away from home. But with BVB finishing their Bundesliga season with a whimper, the German club suddenly became more open to selling Sancho. According to Goal.com, Manchester United have rekindled their interest and have already started talks with Jadon Sancho’s representatives.
Apparently, personal terms were agreed last year as well but Sancho’s camp is confident that Manchester United will be able to close the deal this year.
As outrageous as it seems, reports of a transfer fee of 100 million Euros are doing the rounds as United aim to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford ahead of the Euro Cup.
MANCHESTER CITY AND CHELSEA TO BATTLE FOR JAMES MADDISON
Since signing for Leicester City in 2018, James Maddison has gone on to become an integral part of the side’s midfield. Maddison has chalked up 21 goal contributions across all competitions this season and recently helped Leicester City win the FA Cup.
Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in signing the playmaker and according to reports, The Blues are leading the race for Maddison primarily because City’s priority lies elsewhere.
A world class striker to replace Sergio Aguero is high on City’s agenda and this might just help their Champions League final opponents in their attempt to land James Maddison, who is expected to cost somewhere around 51 million pounds.
ARSENAL EYE THE ACQUISITION OF YVES BISSOUMA AND SANDER BERGE
This season has proved to be disappointing for The Gunners, who are ninth in the points table and have also crashed out of the FA Cup. Mikel Arteta is looking for an overhaul in the midfield, which has largely underperformed.
Ceballos is set to return to Real Madrid after his loan expires. Arsenal might also offload Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Matteo Guendouzi.
If that happens, The Gunners are looking to add Yves Bissouma and Sander Berge as midfield replacements. Yves Bissouma has been fantastic this season for Brighton and playing for Arsenal would be nothing less than a dream for him at this stage in his career.
Sander Berge would also be open to the transfer since Sheffield United have been relegated this season.
It remains to be seen what prices Brighton and Sheffield United demand for these players in the EPL transfer window.
SOUTHAMPTON KEEN ON CHELSEA’S RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK
Southampton are interested in adding Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek to their squad this season. Loftus-Cheek has impressed while playing on loan for Fulham but is expected to head back to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
It’s still unclear whether he will feature in the plans of manager Thomas Tuchel. However, Southampton coach Ralph Hassenhuttl is a big admirer of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and would be keen on a loan deal with the option of making his stay permanent.
