Elliott to Diallo: Players Who Can Have a Breakthrough Premier League Season

The Premier League over the past few years has seen an influx of outstanding talents becoming regulars in top-tier clubs in England. We’ve seen the likes of Phil Foden, Mason Greenwood and Bukayo Saka having breakthrough seasons and have become the first name on the team sheet for their respective clubs.

Another season is almost upon us and another set of young players are looking to break into the first eleven. Players like Harvey Elliott and Amad Diallo are on the verge of a breakthrough season and 2021-22 could potentially be theirs for the taking. We’ve shortlisted five such young and promising players who’d be the ones to watch out for in the 2021-22 Premier League season.

At the tender age of 18, Harvey Elliott took the Championship by storm in the previous season while he was out on loan at Blackburn Rovers. Elliott featured 41 times in the Championship for Rovers in the previous season, finding the back of the net 7 times and had 11 assists to go along with that. Blackburn had a mediocre season overall, but Harvey Elliott was the talk of the town throughout the previous season.

His loan spell has ended and he is back with Liverpool. He featured in Liverpool’s second practice match against the German side Stuttgart and played in a new role. Jurgen Klopp deployed him as an attacking midfielder on the right side of the pitch rather than his usual right-wing position. The youngster seemed to adapt well to his new role and can be an option for Klopp in the coming season.

People may argue that Emile Smith Rowe has already had a breakthrough season of sorts but this could be the year where he makes himself one of the first names on the Arsenal team sheet. He has already scored in the pre-season game for the Gunners and helped to solve the creative midfielder void in the squad.

Row had 37 appearances for Arsenal in the previous season where he scored as well as assisted seven times. He would want to take this tally to double figures in the coming season and Mikel Arteta would be backing him to come good.

After making a headline move to Manchester United, the 19-year-old Amad Diallo is still adapting to life in England. He registered nine appearances for the senior team in the previous season and did find the back of the net as well in the Europa League. Diallo is up against some superb attacking players in the Manchester United squad and now with the signing of Jadon Sancho as well, it seems like he will have to work extremely hard to get a spot in the starting XI.

There is no doubt regarding the quality of the wonderkid and this could potentially be the season where we see the best of Diallo in England.

Leicester City had a torrid season when it came to injury to some key personnel in the defensive backline. Brendan Rodgers turned to academy players to step up and 20-year-old full-back Luke Thomas was one of the pleasant surprises of the season.

He ended 2020-21 as the first-choice left-back for Rodgers. He made a few rookie mistakes as the season progressed but this is where he’d learn and that can help him have a strong season in 2021-22.

The20-year-old Anthony Gordan signed a massive five-year contract in 2020 with his boyhood club Everton and that tells us how highly he is rated within the club. In 2017, he became the sixth youngest player to debut for Everton but hasn’t quite broken into the first-team squad yet.

The winger was out on loan in the previous season to Preston North End and would be hoping that the loan spell would help him gain valuable experience for the highest level. With the new manager, Rafael Benitez at the helm, every player in the squad would have a clean slate when it comes to selection.
