Premier League: Leeds Look To Take Revenge Against Wolves

Another weekend of exciting football nears as Leeds United take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at the Molineux Stadium on Friday. Wolves will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time in months after their 2-1 victory over Southampton, while Leeds will be looking to bounce back after their 2-4 defeat to Arsenal. Bielsa’s men will be eager to take their revenge after their 1-0 defeat to Wolves in the reverse fixture back in October.

Here’s our preview of Sunday’s fixture between Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers:

LEEDS UNITED

Leeds have made the Premier League more exciting ever since their return to the top-flight of English football with their aggressive approach. While this has enriched the experience of the game for the fans, it has led to uneven results. Leeds sit 11th in the Premier League table, with 32 points from 23 matches – winning 10, losing 11 and levelling just two of their fixtures. A victory over Wolves on Friday would again push them past Arsenal to the top half of the League.

While scoring goals was never an issue for the Whites, the club’s defences continue to be weak and are unlikely to improve anytime soon until the injured players return. After their 4-2 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, they have now shipped in 42 goals this season – tying with Crystal Palace for second place – only West Bromwich Albion have leaked more goals.

Leeds injury woes continue – Robin Koch, Rodrigo, Gaetano Berardi, and Diego Llorente are all currently injured and would be missing Friday’s fixture. The absence of Kalvin Phillips from the squad is creating headaches for Marcelo Bielsa, who is struggling to find a replacement for the specialist.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

It is not premature to say that it has been a disappointing Premier League campaign for the Championship winners. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are currently 12th in the table, one spot below Leeds – with 30 points from their 24 matches courtesy of eight wins and six draws. They are only seven points off the top seven, but their Europa League chances are slim given the quality of the teams above them.

The inconsistency which has plagued Wolves is evident in the fact that they have not won back-to-back fixtures since October last year. But a recent uptick in form – they have defeated Arsenal and held back Leicester before crushing Southampton will give the Wolves confidence heading into the fixture.

Wolves have the advantage of having their squad more or less intact for the fixture, except for Raul Jimenez, Willy Boly, and Daniel Podence who are currently injured.

HEAD TO HEAD

Wolves have won their last four fixtures against Leeds across competitions, which gives them an edge heading into Friday’s fixture. Overall, however, Leeds hold the upper hand with 42 wins out of 98 matches played between both the teams. The string of successes Wolves hold also includes the recent 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture back in October, when Raul Jimenez netted the ball at Elland Road.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Both the teams have oscillated between highs and lows this season. Both have plenty of talent in their squads, and able managers to lead them. This lends an air of unpredictability and excitement to Friday’s fixture. A Leeds squad in full strength could have fancied its chances for an easy win, but plagued with injuries, it will be a tough fight for Marcelo Bielsa’s men. Wolves have picked up seven points from their last three encounters and would be looking to continue the upswing against The Whites.

The Whites’ thirst for revenge and an aggressive approach by both the teams is sure to produce plenty of goals.

Leeds Predicted XI:  Meslier (GK); Dallas; Ayling; Struijk; Alioski; Shackleton; Klich; Moreno; Raphinha; Harrison; Bamford.

Wolves Predicted XI: Patricio (GK); Saiss; Coady; Dendoncker; Semedo; Jonny; Neves; Moutinho; Traore; Neto; Jose.
