Neymar to Suarez: Players to Watch Out for in Copa America

After all the controversies regarding the scheduling and the final venue of the Copa America 2021, we finally have the green light and the competition is up and rolling. In this piece, we’ll look at players from the favourite nations who are poised to win this competition, right from the present La Liga champion Luis Suarez to Neymar Jr.

Here are the top five players to look out for in this edition of the prestigious tournament.

NEYMAR JR (BRAZIL)

The Brazilian prodigy, Neymar Jr has another opportunity to light it up in his home tournament. In the past, he has had some wretched luck with injuries in these tournaments but this time around, he looks fit and raring to go. He will be Brazil’s main man in their quest for defending their Copa America title.

LIONEL MESSI (ARGENTINA)

The biggest achievement missing from Lionel Messi’s illustrious cabinet is a trophy with the national team and he’d surely be looking to fix that in the last phase of his glorious career. Argentina starts the tournament as the bookies’ favourites but the team hasn’t won the Copa America since 1993. The whole nation would yet again be looking at Messi to lead them through the tournament and bring glory days back to Argentina.

CLAUDIO BRAVO (CHILE)

Chile’s inspirational captain, Claudio Bravo was the nation’s hero in the 2016 edition as the country became the first team ever to win back-to-back Copa America titles. Bravo is now 38 and is looking to finish his international career on a high. The team is ageing along with the captain, but has enough to give this edition one final shot.

LUIS MURIEL (COLOMBIA)

Colombia is blessed with some strong forwards who are natural goalscorers and Luis Muriel is one of them. The Colombian forward scored 22 times for Serie A side Atalanta this season in the Italian league and most of them came as substitute appearances. He can be an impact player for Colombia this tournament and the one to look out for.

LUIS SUAREZ (URUGUAY)

Luis Suarez’s 2020-21 season was straight out of a Bollywood movie plot. He began at the lowest point where he was considered not good enough for the wages he was making at Barcelona, which saw him slashing his salary and moving bases to Madrid to join Diego Simeone’s Atletico. He didn’t just join them but inspired the whole squad to a season to remember as Atletico won the La Liga. Suarez finished as their highest goalscorer and would be looking to carry his red hot form for his national side as well in the Copa America 2021.
