Just like the European leagues, the Hero ISL too was pretty busy when it came to the January transfer window. We saw some high profile players like Nerijus Valskis or Lallianzuala Chhangte move clubs in the middle of the season and this further emphasises how dynamic the league is currently. These transfers could be game-changers for a few clubs who are in the race for the Hero ISL Shield.
Here are the five transfers that caught the eye in the Hero ISL from the January transfer window.
(Jamshedpur FC to Chennaiyin FC)
Chennaiyin fans would be delighted to see their favourite Nerijus Valskis back in the colours of the Marina Machans. It was surprising to see Valskis moving clubs in the middle of the season after Jamshedpur FC’s bright start to the season. It seems like Valksis was a bit tired of the bubble with the Jamshedpur team and wanted a reunion with the team from the South. This could be a massive move for both the clubs as Chennaiyin were aching for a goalscorer and for Jamshedpur, Valskis was one of their top foreign players.
(Chennaiyin FC to Mumbai City FC)
Sticking with Chennaiyin FC, it was another surprise when Lallianzuala Chhangte joined Mumbai City FC on loan for the rest of the season as well as the AFC Champions League. This was a deadly deadline day transfer for the Islanders as they are hoping to get their season back on track. Chhangte was struggling to adapt to the style of Bozidar Bandovic, Chennaiyin’s coach and this move to a much more attacking side would help him take his game to the next level.
(FC Goa to Odisha FC)
Redeem Tlang was another player who would be disappointed with the way the season has gone for him so far. Chances have been few in number for the winger from Shillong at his new club FC Goa, so a loan move to Odisha FC would help him regain some of his lost confidence.
(Odisha FC to Mumbai City FC)
One of the most baffling moves of the transfer window was Odisha FC shipping off their captain to their direct top-four rivals. Vinit Rai joined Mumbai City FC earlier in the window on loan. Rai would add solidity to the Mumbai midfield but would be a big miss in the centre of the park for the Juggernauts.
(HNK Sibenik to ATK Mohun Bagan)
The positive move of the window was the return of Sandesh Jhingan to the Hero ISL as his stint in Croatia got over. The Indian centre-back has made his way back to ATK Mohun Bagan and is a big signing for the Mariners as they were struggling at the heart of their defence. Jhingan is coming back from an injury and wouldn’t be rushed straight to the playing XI but could play a crucial part in the business end of the competition.
