Player Ratings: ATK Mohun Bagan Stamp Authority in Kolkata Derby

The second leg of the iconic Kolkata derby took place at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa, where ATK Mohun Bagan handed SC East Bengal a 3-1 defeat. There was plenty at stake for the Mariners who were looking to go five points clear at the top of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) table. while the Red and Gold Brigade were playing for pride in the biggest game of Indian football.

The match was hotly-contested and had all the elements of a typical derby game. There were tackles flying everywhere and emotions running high throughout the 90 minutes. In the end, the Mariners were by far the better the team and the quality in their squad prevailed. Here are the ratings of the top Mariners from the iconic Kolkata derby.

ROY KRISHNA – 9.5/10

Yet again it was the Roy Krishna show in the Kolkata derby. It’s uncanny how time and again the striker from Fiji steps up and delivers for his team. After scoring yet again in this match, he became just the third player in the history of the competition to score in six consecutive matches. Apart from scoring his goal, he set the other two up for David Williams and Javi Hernandez and for his all-round performance he earned yet another Hero of the Match Award

David Williams is getting accustomed to the new position he is playing in the team now. He is usually deployed on the left-wing now to cut inside from there and score for the team whenever needed. In this match as well he found himself free in the box and Roy Krishna found his mate to give the Mariners the lead in the Kolkata derby. He created plenty of chances, especially in the first half. The right side of the SC East Bengal defence struggled massively to cope up with the combination play of David Williams and Subhashish Bose.

He played in the left wingback position in this match and had an exceptional game. He was constantly a threat from the left side of the attack for the Mariners and combined brilliantly with David Williams. He was eager to overlap whenever he got an opportunity to do so and put some very dangerous crosses in the box as well. Defensively he was solid as well and for his all-round performance, Subhashish deserves an 8/10 rating.

You could see by the body language of Pritam Kotal that the Kolkata derby meant so much to him. He was the proud captain of his team in this game and led the Mariners with plenty of passion. He was ready to put his body on the line on plenty of occasions and was also eager to make sure that the opponent knows that he is up for this intense match. He was up against one of the best players in the league when it comes to dribbling with the ball, Bright Enobakhare. He did a brilliant job against him in the one on one battle and was one of the standout players in the team on the night.

Super sub, Javi Hernandez had an immediate impact on the game when he replaced Marcelinho in the 66th minute. The Spanish playmaker was brought in when the game was on the knife-edge at 1-1. He brought quality in the attacking play for his team and controlled the game superbly well. He even got himself in the box and scored an outstanding header to seal three points for his side and for that he deserves a mention in this rating piece.
