Ogbeche to Colaco: Race For the Hero ISL Golden Boot

The race for the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) Golden Boot is as competitive as the fight for the league title. Former Paris St. Germain striker, Bartholomew Ogbeche leads the race with nine goals to his name but others aren’t too far away from the Hyderabad striker.

Let’s see the five contenders for the Golden Boot Award from the 2021-22 Hero ISL season.

As mentioned earlier, Hyderabad FC’s charismatic striker Bartholomew Ogbeche is the leader of the pack in the race for the Golden Boot. In ten matches so far in the season, Ogbeche has found the back of the net nine times. The impressive part about him is that he is the all-time leading goalscorer for two other Hero ISL clubs in NorthEast United and Kerala Blasters. It won’t be a surprise if he ends up breaking Hyderabad’s record as well. Ogbeche is also deployed as a second striker or a number 10 occasionally but it still doesn’t hinder his goalscoring form.

IGOR ANGULO (Mumbai City FC)

Last season’s Golden Boot award winner Igor Angulo is well in the race this season as well. Post his move to Mumbai City FC, he has become their number one striker. The 37-year-old striker has netted eight times in eleven appearances. His goals have dried up and have consequently resulted in the lack of form for the team. Angulo would be hoping to get back to scoring a bucket load of goals for his club and help his team defend the Hero ISL Shield.

DESHORN BROWN (NorthEast United FC)

One of the most impressive strikers this season has been NorthEast United’s 31-year-old forward Deshorn Brown. The Jamaican was a part of Bengaluru FC in the 2019-20 season but it never really worked out for him. Since his move to NorthEast, he has looked like a different player on the pitch. In just six matches, Brown has scored six times that also includes a hat-trick. Even though his team is struggling to get points, Brown has been the highlight of the Highlanders’ season.

The most expensive signing in the Hero ISL is living up to his price tag for his new club ATK Mohun Bagan. Hugo Boumous is a creative midfielder but has the ability to score some vital goals for his club. The managers love it when Boumous is in and around the opposition box pulling off killer passes or getting on the end of tap ins. He has a good strike with his right foot and so far in the season, he has made the most of it. In nine appearances, Boumous has scored five times for the Mariners.

Sticking with the Mariners, they have one of the most impressive Indian forwards in Liston Colaco. When Colaco shoots, the world stands still and admires. He has a powerful right foot and at the same time can curl goals in from outside the box as well. We’ve seen some remarkable goals from him already and there’s more to come from Liston in the season. Under the new manager, Juan Ferrando, Colaco is being used further up the pitch which is good for him personally as well as for the national team. He too has scored five goals this season and is the highest-scoring Indian player in the season so far.
