Bengaluru FC vs ATK Mohun Bagan was a significant game in the context of the league table in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL). This battle was between Bengaluru FC, a team who have been heavyweights in the Hero ISL ever since they joined in 2018 and ATK Mohun Bagan, who in their debut season are looking at a AFC Champions League spot as their primary objective.
This tactical battle was won by Antonio Lopez Habas’ team as they brushed Bengaluru aside 2-0. Two first-half goals by Roy Krishna and Marcelinho made the difference in this game and at the end, it was a very comfortable win for the Mariners. Let’s look into the top Mariners who made a difference in Bengaluru FC vs ATK Mohun Bagan.
MARCELINHO – 9.5/10
The impact Marcelinho has had since he joined the club in January has been massive. That’s what world-class players do and the Brazilian is definitely right up there. The game needed some ‘Marce Magic’ and that’s exactly what the playmaker did in the first half as he curled a free-kick right from the edge of the box into the right top corner.
Habas used his attacking players effectively in this game and the partnership between Roy Krishna and Marcelinho seems to be developing into an important one for the Mariners. The Brazilian was the Hero of the match in this game and deserved it thoroughly.
ROY KRISHNA – 9/10
The current Golden Boot leader, Roy Krishna yet again put on a show at the Fatorda Stadium, Goa. He was ready to run the channels for his team and worked tirelessly hard in this game as well. He was the one who pounced on the error by Bengaluru’s centre-back Pratik Chaudhari and earned his team a crucial penalty. We all know if Roy Krishna is standing behind the ball from the penalty spot then there’s going to be only one result. The ball was bound to end up at the back of the net and he kept his record of not missing penalties in the league intact.
DAVID WILLIAMS – 9/10
Traditionally we’ve seen that David Williams is deployed normally as the second striker with his mate Roy Krishna upfront, given the kind of understanding the two have from their Wellington Phoenix days. But in this match, the Australian forward played as the left-sided winger. He made the difference in this match as he provided the spark the team needed going forward. The Bengaluru defence already had to contain the deadly duo of Marcelinho and Roy Krishna upfront but Williams from the left-wing created plenty of issues for them as well.
SANDESH JHINGAN – 8/10
Sandesh Jhingan was the designated captain for the night and he did lead the team by example. He was exemplary in defence and made sure that Arindam Bhattachraja in goal had a relatively quiet night. From set-pieces, he was a constant threat on the night and he almost scored his first-ever goal in the league but was denied by a magnificent save by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.
CARL MCHUGH – 8/10
Carl McHugh normally sits in front of the back four as the sole defensive midfielder but in this match, he had new signing Lenny Rodrigues to share some responsibility defensively. In the 4-4-2 system which ATK Mohun Bagan deployed in this game, Carl McHugh and Lenny Rodrigues worked tirelessly and didn’t give the opposition midfield even a second in the middle of the park. The Irishman also had a try from distance and it needed a top drawer save from Gurpreet in Bengaluru’s goal to stop that from going in.
