Hero ISL: ATK Mohun Bagan vs NorthEast United FC Player Ratings

ATK Mohun Bagan vs NorthEast United FC marked the first game of the new year for the Mariners. They had the chance of clinching the top spot back in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) table and they did so in style. A comfortable 2-0 win meant that Antonio Lopez Habas’ side started 2021 with a win.

Here’s how some of the influential players who had a positive impact on the overall result fared in the match against the Highlanders.

New year but the same Roy Krishna, as he opened the scoring in this match for the Mariners. His striker’s instinct was evident in the goal he scored from the corner as great attackers anticipate the ball movement in the box in such scenarios and that’s what Roy Krishna did. While others reacted late, the Fiji international got his head first on the ball to mark the first goal of 2021 for ATK Mohun Bagan. He caused Dylan Fox and Benjamin Lambot, the opposition centre-backs many headaches throughout the game and earned his Hero of the Match award against the Highlanders.

TIRI – 8.5/10

The part of the most robust defence of the league, Tiri was yet again brilliant in the match against NorthEast United. The Spanish centre-back was his usual calm and composed self on the ball and also got an assist at the other end of the pitch. The set-piece from the training ground worked perfectly as Tiri’s headed pass in the box and Krishna’s diving header resulted in the first goal of the match. He kept things tidy at the back as well and helped his team keep their seventh clean sheet of the season; the most by any team so far. Deserves a high rating of 8.5 from this match.

We saw the best of Subhasish Bose at left-back in this match. It took time for the game to get going and Habas’ half time talk created the major difference in ATK Mohun Bagan vs NorthEast United FC. It became apparent that the Spaniard wanted Subhasish to contribute more going forward and he did that pretty well in the second half. He attempted many crosses in the second half and also created a few goalscoring opportunities. For the shift he put in at the left-back position, Bose deserves a 8/10 rating.

EDU GARCIA – 7.5/10

Getting your set-piece routines right is the key for any team to be successful in Indian football. If you have someone of Edu Garcia’s quality in your team on set-piece duty then you will score time and again from these situations. Edu Garcia’s corners resulted in the two goals which were scored in the second half. The first one worked out pretty well according to the plan and the second one had a little bit of luck involved with it but Edu’s delivery was spot on. Even though he didn’t get the assist for either of the goals, he deserves the credit for them. Another top-class performance from the Spanish midfielder earns him a 7.5 rating from us.

Pritam Kotal in this match was outstanding and his numbers reflect the kind of impact he had on the eventual result. Along with Edu Garcia, he created the joint-most number of chances by any Mariner in this match and he also completed the most number of crosses in the game. He doesn’t quite get the recognition he deserves when it comes to clean sheets secured by ATK Mohun Bagan but he has a major part in that department as well. His performances in the past week have been excellent and he was rightly selected in the team of the week by the league.
