Big Names Feature in ATK Mohun Bagan’s January Transfer Window

The January transfer window is finally shut and there have been major players movements in the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) with the league approaching its business end. ATK Mohun Bagan also haven’t been left behind when it comes to getting some headline transfers in this window.

In this blog, we will look in at the two-player swaps and other transfers the Mariners have managed to pull off in this transfer window.

Transfer: Odisha FC to ATK Mohun Bagan

Ahead of the season, Brazilian forward Marcelinho decided to ditch the colours of Hyderabad FC and find a new home in the Hero ISL with Odisha FC. However, the season wasn’t going according to plan for Marcelinho as he found himself out of favour from the Odisha team. Former Odisha FC coach, Stuart Baxter continued to struggle to find the best position for all his forward players and Marcelinho was a part of this problem. So when a move to ATK Mohun Bagan was announced in January there was bound to be a buzz around him given his record in the league previously. So far it looks like the move of this transfer window as we’ve already witnessed some ‘Marce Magic’ in the colours of the Mariners.

Brad Inman’s debut season in Indian football sadly never got going with the Mariners. The Australian forward did feature in a few games from the bench and even started a couple of games but never got the rhythm he would have desired. This move to bottom-placed Odisha FC can help him understand the league much better.

There were plenty of expectations from Indian midfielder Glan Martins when he joined the Mariners. He is definitely a serious talent but it was always going to be difficult for a youngster to break into that ATK Mohun Bagan midfield which is packed with internationals. When an opportunity came his way, Martins decided to join FC Goa, the state from which he hails. He has had a dream start to his life as a Gaur with his stunning strike against Mumbai City FC.

Lenny Rodrigues has over the years been a Hero ISL stalwart and he continues to put in solid performances in the middle of the park. His style of play seems well suited to what Antonio Lopez Habas desires from his midfielder and he has started off in a promising fashion. His double-pivot partnership with Carl McHugh might just make the Mariners the most sought after midfield and can help them bridge the gap between them and the league leaders.

Dheeraj Singh was the custodian for the India Under-17 team which played in the World Cup hosted by India. His career hasn’t got going since the World Cup as he has failed to make the number one keeper spot his in his previous teams as well. This season also the story was pretty much the same for Dheeraj as he found himself as the understudy of the brilliant Arindam Bhattacharya. His move to FC Goa made sense for him personally as well as now he has the chance to make that number one keeper spot his very own.
