ATK Mohun Bagan have a tough test lined up in front of them in the form of Bengaluru FC (BFC) in their next match in the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL). The two teams are pretty evenly matched and have had a similar sort of a season so far.
ATK Mohun Bagan will look to beat the unbeaten run of Bengaluru FC in this match as along with Hyderabad FC, they are the only team who haven’t tasted defeat in the league so far. Sunil Chhetri and his BFC team are coming to the party slowly as the fitness standards of the players are improving.
Antonio Lopez Habas pulled off a tactical masterclass in their previous match against FC Goa. The press of the team was spot on and he didn’t let Goa have any dangerous possession in the final third of his team. Roy Krishna converted from the spot to ensure that they got back to winning ways and get their campaign back on track.
Bengaluru FC, on the other hand, have been scoring goals for fun now. But best believe that they won’t get that space and time against ATK Mohun Bagan. It’ll be a battle of two Spanish coaches who are tactically one of the best in the league. Let’s analyse both the teams in further detail.
ATK MOHUN BAGAN
Antonio Lopez Habas has easily juggled between two systems this season – 3-5-2 and 4-3-3, which he used efficiently against FC Goa in their previous match. Habas was happy with the way his team has responded to his demands and pulled off his game plan with the way they did in their previous match.
There are still concerns about goalscorers in that squad. Roy Krishna is probably one of the best strikers in the league, at least that’s what the stats tell us. He has been a few of the players who have impressed this season. But apart from him only Manvir Singh has netted for the iconic club so far. They need David Williams to soon join the party and he seems to be somewhat back to his best after suffering some injuries in the early part of the season.
The team will be without Michael Soosairaj who is ruled out of the season and there are doubts about Spanish creative midfielder Javi Hernandez’s fitness.
Carles Cuadrat led his team to the Hero ISL trophy in the 2018-19 season. It was just their second season in the league. They played the final against FC Goa in Mumbai and Rahul Bheke’s header in added time meant that the league got its new champion.
This season they started off slowly mainly because Dimas Delgado who is one of the first names on the team sheet was injured. They are a major threat from set pieces and their players like Erik Paartalu and Junanan are aerial threats and can bully any defender in the opposition box. Their long throws from Rahul Bheke and Harmanjot Khabra also cause many issues for the opposition defenders.
Adding to the above things, now they have Indian legend Sunil Chhetri ready and firing goals regularly. They also have Thai league’s highest goalscorer Cleiton Silva in their ranks who is another goal threat in the final third.
They will be without their Indian talent Ashique Kuruniyan who suffered an injury in their previous game. He has been brilliant so far in the season and will be a major miss for the team.
ATK Mohun Bagan (3-5-2): Arindam Bhattacharja (GK); Pritam Kotal (C), Tiri, Sandesh Jhingan; Prabir Das, Pronay Halder, Carl McHugh, Edu Garcia, Subhasish Bose; Roy Krishna, David Williams
Bengaluru FC (4-3-3): Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (GK); Pratik Chaudhari, Juanan, Rahul Bheke, Harmanjot Khabra; Suresh Wangjam, Dimas Delgado, Erik Paartalu; Sunil Chhetri (C), Kristian Opseth. Cleiton Silva
