Hero ISL: What all to expect from ATKMB vs CFC

Match number 66 of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) between ATK Mohun Bagan and Chennaiyin FC (ATKMB vs CFC) will take place at the Fatorda Stadium, Goa. After a couple of disappointing results, the Mariners will look to get back to winning ways against the Marina Machans. The reverse leg was a frustrating 0-0 draw and both coaches will hope to see an improvement in this game.

Here are the top things to consider ahead of the upcoming fixture.

The Mariners failed to go top of the table as they didn’t manage to win either of the games against Mumbai City FC or FC Goa. There are just five points separating themfrom the top spot which they so desperately crave. For that, they need to get back to winning ways starting with this game. They now face a Chennaiyin FC side who have won only one game in their last six encounters.

Goalscoring is an issue for the Mariners currently as they are the joint-second lowest goalscorers of the league. Defensively they are as solid as Antonio Lopez Habas would want them to be. They have the joint-most clean sheets in the league and their defenders always give it their everything on the field. The Mariners have the luxury of picking the starting XI from a fully available squad, apart from the long-term injuries in Michael Soosairaj and Jobby Justin.

Csaba Lazlo’s Chennaiyin FC have been one of the most frustrating teams in the league so far. They play some beautiful football when it comes to their build up play but are lacking on their end product more often than not. Defensively as well, they seem vulnerable and ATKMB would like to exploit these fragilities in this game.

The team has struggled when it comes to injury concerns as they lost their club captain and one of the most creative players in the league, Rafael Crivellaro for the season. In their previous match against SC East Bengal, boy wonder Anirudh Thapa had to come off because of a hamstring injury. Since then it has been reported that striker Jakub Sylvestr also picked up a knock. There might be a chance that we get to see new singing Manuel Lanzarote in this game who already has some valuable Hero ISL experience under his belt.

ATK Mohun Bagan (3-5-2): Arindam Bhattacharja; Pritam Kotal, Tiri, Sandesh Jhingan; Subhasish Bose, Carl McHugh, Jayesh Rane, Prabir Das, Edu Garcia; David Williams, Roy Krishna

Chennaiyin FC (4-4-2): Vishal Kaith; Reagan Singh, Eli Sabia, Enes Sipovic, Jerry Lalrinzuala; Anirudh Thapa, Memo Moura, Manuel Lanzarote, Lallianzuala Chhangte; Esmael Goncalves, Rahim Ali

Antonio Lopez Habas acknowledged that the goalscoring record needs to improve for the Mariners in his pre match press conference. “The reason is the balance. Defensively, we’re more balanced. We need to find the balance between attack and defence.  For now, I’m only worried about the possibility of attacking more. This is our aim.”

“We created a lot of chances, I guess, we created the most number of chances in the league. If we had scored at least 50% of them then we would’ve been even better in the table. It is not right to see how other teams are, we need to organize our team in our own way and it has to be organized right from the defence.” This is what Chennaiyin coach Csaba Lazlo had to say ahead of ATKMB vs CFC.

The match between ATK Mohun Bagan and Chennaiyin FC will be broadcasted in India from 7:30 PM IST in Star Sports 1, Star Sports 2, Star Sports 3, Star Sports 1 Hindi, and their respective HD TV channels. You can also live stream the match on Disney+ Hotstar and JioTV.
