Every time the European Championships comes along it springs up some national heroes for fans to celebrate. Euro 2020 has given its fair share of top performers, where we have the usual suspects in Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku, who are living upto the hype, whereas the likes of Emil Forsberg are grabbing their part of the headlines as well.
In this piece we’ll look at five such players who have impressed so far in Euro 2020.
EMIL FORSBERG (SWEDEN)
Sweden and RB Leipzig’s playmaker Emil Forsberg has been one of the standout players of Euro 2020. He found the back of the net three times already in this competition and by doing so has helped Sweden reach the Round of 16 stage. Forsberg typically plays from the left wing but can cut inside and score with his favoured right foot. The 29-year old winger has been Sweden’s best player so far in Euro 2020 and they’d be banking on him to come out against Ukraine if they are to qualify for the Quarterfinals.
ROMELU LUKAKU (BELGIUM)
Ever since Romelu Lukaku moved to Italy, his game has gone to the next level. Under Antonio Conte in Inter Milan, Lukaku has become a beast of a striker and regularly finds the back of the net. It’s not just his goalscoring form but his overall game which has improved tremendously and we’ve seen this unfold in Euro 2020. His link-up play with Kevin de Bruyne is magnificent and the duo is predominantly the reason why Belgium are the No 1 ranked number in FIFA rankings.
GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM (NETHERLANDS)
At Liverpool, Georginio Wijnaldum transitioned into a bankable centre-midfielder who was amongst the first names on the team sheet for Jurgen Klopp. In Frank de Boer’s Dutch side, Wijnaldum has been given a much freer role and the attacking side of his play is coming out pretty beautifully in this system. Wijnaldum has already scored three times in the competition and is leading Netherlands by example in Euro 2020.
GARETH BALE (WALES)
Gareth Bale has been involved in 66% of all goals scored by Wales in Euro 2020. He has provided two assists but is yet to score in the competition. Wales’ game plan is pretty straightforward, keep things compact defensively and hope Bale and Aaron Ramsey combine for a goal on the other end. Bale has done well so far in the competition but his biggest test would come against Denmark in the Round of 16 stage.
CRISTIANO RONALDO (PORTUGAL)
Was there any doubt about Cristiano Ronaldo at the start of the tournament? If there were any then the king of European football has put all of them at rest. Ronaldo is the highest goalscorer in Euro 2020 with five goals already and is looking all set to win the Golden Boot Award. He is leading the line for Portugal and the defending champions would be hoping to come good against Belgium in the Round of 16 stage.
