Sixteen nations are competing in the football event at Olympics 2020 hoping to bring glory to their respective countries. This event will feature some of the most exciting players in the sport, along with the most experienced of the lot in Brazil’s captain Dani Alves.

The age limit to participate at the Olympics in football has been capped at 24 years with only three players above that age allowed per squad. There is a plethora of young talent who are battling for those three medal spots at the end of the competition.

Let’s look at the top five footballers participating in the 2020 Olympics and who are already lighting up the competition.

DANI ALVES (Brazil)

By far, the most experienced and most successful player on this list is Brazil’s captain Dani Alves The former Barcelona wing-back is the most decorated player in football history with 42 titles to his name. This will be his eighth major international tournament for the Selecao.

At 38, he is also the oldest player at this year’s Olympics and the reigning champions will be banking on Alves’ experience of retaining the gold for the country.

ERIC BAILEY (Ivory Coast)

Manchester United’s centre-back, Eric Bailly is amongst the big names featuring at Olympics 2020. Bailly won the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast in 2015 and would be hoping to add to that cabinet with the national team in this edition of the Games.

He would be hoping that his good showing at the Olympics would help him get more minutes in the United jersey, so that he can start the season on a positive note with the Red Devils.

ANDRÉ-PIERRE GIGNAC (France)

France has used up one spot on the above age limit players for forward Andre-Pierre Gignac and that has worked out like a charm so far for the Les Blues. Gignac has scored four goals and one assist already in just two matches as France would be looking to fight it hard for the gold at the Olympics.

The Tigres UANL forward helped France make a comeback against South Africa with a remarkable second-half hattrick after the disappointments of the first match. Gignac may be 35 currently, but is still playing football at an extremely high level.

RICHARLISON (Brazil)

Brazilan winger Richarlison is one of the more exciting as well as the more established players in this competition. He featured for the Selecao in the recently-concluded Copa America 2021, where he scored one goal in their run to the final.

Richarlison made history in the match against Germany as he became the first player from the Premier League to score a hattrick at the games. The Everton attacker has a new manager in charge of the club and would like to impress the gaffer without actually being present with the team through his performances in the Olympics. He has had a bright start to the competition already with three goals in two matches.

PEDRI (Spain)

The Spanish midfield prodigy, Pedri was awarded the Best Young Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020. He has had a season to savour both with club and country where he has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet. There were some concerns regarding his selection for the 2020 Olympics given the amount of game time he has already had in the season but Spain went ahead with his selection. Despite being only 18, Pedri is going to be the most influential player for La Roja in this competition.
