Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland is the hottest striker in the world currently. The youngster has had the spotlight on him ever since the 2019-20 season with the German club. It seems like the Norwegian striker always saw the Westfalenstadion as a good stepping stone to even bigger and better things as his father and agent have been taking public European trips to the biggest clubs to discuss their client’s future.
A 75 million release clause written into Haaland’s Dortmund contract will become active in the summer of 2022, but a bidding war could be sparked before then if the Norwegian keeps up his astonishing goal scoring rate. So where could he move to? Which clubs are likely to be most interested? Let’s find out.
Manchester City could be the perfect destination for Haaland. The 20-year-old has strong connections to the club through his father, who played for City for three years. Haaland was even born in England and has been pictured in the past wearing a Manchester City jersey as well.
City should soon be in the market for a new centre forward as Sergio Aguero is out of contract at the end of the season. The signing of Haaland would be a real statement of intent from the Citizens. Even though Pep Guardiola has mentioned that the club won’t spend big in the summer but plenty can change in the due course of time.
Haaland would love to have another option on the red side of the city and Manchester United’s interest in the striker a year ago was well documented. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flew down to Austria to pitch to Haaland while he was still at Red Bull Salzburg. He shares a relation with Haaland from their time at Molde and would be hoping that this will give them the edge to get the signature of the star striker.
Edinson Cavani has filled the centre forward role at Old Trafford this season but the Uruguayan is seen as a short-term solution. Haaland can surely take United’s attack to the next level and the prospects of him linking up with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba seem too good to be true.
The Blues have struggled to find a proper and consistent centre forward ever since the departure of Diego Costa. The Dortmund forward can be the ideal option for Thomas Tuchel.
A front line of Werner, Haaland, Ziyech and Havertz would create havoc in the league and make them sure-shot contenders. Chelsea have a fantastic squad but they lack the firepower in the number 9 position. They need a 20 plus goals striker and Haaland could be exactly that. He could be the key to Chelsea’s long-term dominance again.
Haaland would be a good fit for Real Madrid, although Karim Benzema has finally made himself the main player at the Santiago Bernabeu and it could be difficult to displace him from the starting XI on his current form.
In Zinedine Zidane’s 4-3-3 system, the Norwegian could be a perfect striker for the Los Blancos. In Eden Hazard, Luka Modric, Marco Asensio and Toni Kroos, Haaland could prosper and achieve things beyond imagination.
Barcelona could use a new centre-forward after the exit of Luis Suarez ahead of the current season but their financial situation is even more precarious than ever. Even at 75 million, a price well below market value for someone of Haaland’s calibre, the club could struggle to find the funds to secure the Norwegian.
But the thought of him combining with Lionel Messi, Frankie de Jong and Antonie Greizmann could make Barcelona dominate European football yet again.
