The Inter Milan vs Real Madrid fixture comes at a very important stage for both the clubs as they are in desperate need of points at this stage. Group B of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21 has been the one group which has kept all of us on the edge of the seats with some shocking results so far.
This match could be the deciding factor of whether one of the teams can go through to the next stage of the Champions League or crash down to the Europa League for the rest of the season. The reverse fixture of this match was contested just before the international break where both sides played out a five-goal thriller with Real Madrid emerging as the eventual winners at home.
Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan are winless in the Champions League so far. A loss will effectively squash all their hopes of progressing in the competition. They are coming into this match after a remarkable comeback in their previous Serie A game against Torino where they went on to win the match 4-2 after being down two goals till the 62nd minute. Conte travelled to Madrid earlier this month without star striker Romelu Lukaku but the Belgian is back for this encounter and he can be the difference between the two teams. Marcelo Brozovic, Aleksandr Kolarov, Daniele Padelli, Matias Vecino and Stefano Sensi are all major doubts and expected to sit this one out.
The most successful team in Champions League history have uncharacteristically struggled in the group so far. Out of three games, they have only the solitary win that too came against Inter in the last gameweek of the Champions League. Madrid were hammered 4-1 against Valencia just before the international break but seem to have steadied the ship with a 1-1 draw against Villareal in their previous game. Real Madrid will be without captain Sergio Ramos, Federico Valverde, Luka Jovic and Alvaro Odriozola, while Karim Benzema, Casemiro and Eder Militao all missed the weekend draw with Villarreal but could return for this encounter.
PREDICTED XI FOR INTER MILAN VS REAL MADRID
Inter Milan (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic (GK); Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni, Achraf Hakimi, Nicolo Barella, Arturo Vidal, Roberto Gagliardini, Ivan Perisic, Lautaro Martinez, Romelu Lukaku
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois (GK); Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric, Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard
PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Lautaro Martinez was involved in both goals Inter scored against Madrid in the reverse fixture. Five of his Champions League goals have come on the road this season and just one at the San Siro. He’d be desperate to rectify that and hope to have a major impact on this match.
Eden Hazard is yet to open his European account for the Los Blancos in eight appearances for the club since moving from Chelsea last summer. There are talks that youngster Rodrygo should start in place of the Belgian but Hazard’s quality is not to be questioned and he’ll look to break the duck in this match, especially when it matters the most for his team.
