All That Transpired on Deadline Day of the 2022 Summer Transfer Window

The 2022 summer transfer window ended last week with plenty of incidents occurring at the 11th hour, literally! While many transfer deals were completed before the deadline hour, few truly came out as a shock. Moreover, a unique incident unfolded where the deal collapsed terribly.

Here, we look at some headline-making drama that transpired on the Deadline Day of the 2022 summer transfer window.

Aubameyang’s shock move to West London

Ex-Gunner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was donning the Arsenal kit and the captain’s armband last year. However, an array of poor performances saw him fall out of favour with gaffer Mikel Arteta, which triggered his untimely move away from the Emirates. Aubameyang joined Barcelona on a free transfer and made himself home at the Spotify Camp Nou.

However, with the inclusion of Robert Lewandowski in the squad, Aubameyang saw himself left out yet again. With a possible exit on the cards, the Gabonese striker decided to make a shock move to Arsenal’s rival club, Chelsea. The man who once stated that he wanted to become a legend of the club like Thierry Henry and even donned the famous No. 14 jersey, now sees himself wearing the accursed No. 9 of London’s Blues.

Many compare Aubameyang’s journey with that of Cesc Fabregas, the former Arsenal captain who joined Barcelona only to later join Chelsea. It will be interesting to see how the 33-year-old fares against his former club, whilst sporting an Arsenal tattoo on his arm.

Martin Braithwaite’s revenge plot

The horrid transfer saga surrounding Martin Braithwaite finally came to an end. The 31-year-old has been vilified by Barcelona supporters for still playing at the club, regardless of his performance. Given Barcelona’s current financial situation, the club were on course to offload deadwood. The club representatives reportedly offered Braithwaite a contract termination proposal, which the Danish refused.

Following this incident, Braithwaite was booed by the Barcelona supporters for notleaving the club, every time he would step on the pitch. It took some time but Braithwaite finally agreed to terminate his contract with the club on the deadline day with plenty of opportunities in Turkey and other leagues. However, the Danish striker decided to join Barcelona’s rival Espanyol on a free transfer. This year’s Barcelona derby will surely be interesting. Keep your popcorn ready!

Bamba Dieng’s nightmare

Bamba Dieng is a young prospect playing for Marseille in Ligue 1. He was heavily linked with Leeds United for the majority of the transfer window, with his move all but certain. On Deadline Day, the young Senegalese was reportedly waiting in his private jet when he was informed that his deal had been hijacked by Ligue 1 side Nice. It was up to Dieng where he would go.

The 22-year-old decided to ditch his flight to Leeds and instead sign for the French side. However, he would soon end up failing his medical which called off the deal, leaving Dieng with no deal. The disgruntled player, who was on the verge of joining Leeds, returned to his club Marseille the following week.

Barcelona sign Spanish fullback duo

Barcelona have done some serious business this transfer window despite their financial crisis. Moreover, they were so involved that they were busy even on the deadline day. Barcelona sold Aubameyang to Chelsea for approximately €15 million plus Marco Alonso from Chelsea. Yes, Aubameyang, who left Arsenal for free was sold to Chelsea for a price tag by Barcelona. Not only did Barcelona get money for the player, but they also got another player in the deal.

That very day, Barcelona saw another Spaniard heading their way. It was yet another player from Arsenal on a free transfer. It was La Masia prodigy Hector Bellerin, who was looking for an exit ever since last year. Arsenal were happy to terminate his contract after failed negotiations with Bellerin’s loan club Real Betis. Despite their mammoth debt, Barcelona have been one of the busiest teams in the transfer window, and now has a very competitive team for the season.

Memphis stays at Barcelona

Memphis Depay had one foot out the door as negotiations with Juventus progressed. Memphis was amongst many Barca players who were rumoured to leave the club. The Turin-based club weren’t the only club involved in a bid to sign him, with Ligue 1 side Lyon and Premier League side Chelsea in the talks. However, in a shocking revelation, Memphis announced on his social media that he will stay at the Spotify Camp Nou on Deadline Day.

While many were expecting his imminent departure, the 28-year-old chose to stay.

Wesley Fofana FINALLY joins Chelsea

Wesley Fofana was a player that Chelsea were after throughout the summer transfer window. Chelsea had already signed Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella to strengthen their defence. However, these signings were not as impactful as some had anticipated. Thomas Tuchel wanted to add one more defender to the squad and identified the young Frenchman as the perfect candidate.

Chelsea made several bids for Fofana to Leicester City starting from £60 million, all of which were rejected. However, on the deadline day, Chelsea increased their bid to £75 million, which was accepted by the Leicester City camp. A transfer deal that saw so many rejections that people wrote it off, finally went through before time ran out.
