What Is the Significance of the Match Between India Maharajas and World XI?

The Indian Legends assemble one more time, after over a year, to face the Legends from the Rest of the World. The Indian side will be called ‘Indian Maharajas’ in this fixture, which is scheduled for 16th September at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

You may wonder why this fixture is a big deal albeit, all our favourite legends muster to play once again. We find out.

A Celebration of India’s Independence

The main reason why this match is being played is to celebrate India’s 75 years of Independence. India, as a nation, has reached this milestone and to honour that, this fixture was set up. The India Maharajas will be led by the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly while the World XI will be led by ex-England captain Eoin Morgan.

This match was supposed to be played on August 22nd. However, due to the international fixtures, the match was postponed to the 16th of September.

Absence of Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar, who was one of the star performers last year in the Legends cricket league, will not be playing this match. This comes after the players complained about their unpaid wages by the league officials. Sachin, who was the ambassador of the league and India’s captain, did not receive his entire wage either. Following the saga, Sachin has cut his ties with the association.

Returning Legends of India

Sourav Ganguly replaces a departing Sachin to assume the role of captain of the India Maharajas. Virender Sehwag returns along with Yusuf Pathan and Irfan Pathan. Alongside them, Subramaniam Badrinath returns to action along with Naman Ojha and Pragyan Ojha.

Amongst the newer members are Joginder Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Parthiv Patel and Ashok Dinda. We will also see S Sreesanth play for the first time in years..

Returning Legends of World XI

Eoin Morgan returns to cricket after over a month of international retirement. He will lead the World XI. Ex-New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum return to action along with ex-South African stars, Jacques Kallis, Matt Prior and Jonty Rhodes, ex-Aussie Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson and Brett Lee and many more.

Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan will return to action one more time after last year’s Legends cricket tournament.

Where can we watch it?
