There is a buzz of excitement around Indian cricket suddenly as one of our cricketing heroes from the 2000s, Rahul Dravid has taken over as the head coach of the national team. Dravid has had a successful stint as the coach of the India A and India U-19 teams and as the director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) at Bengaluru. The biggest test of his coaching career lies ahead of him as he leads India into what can be the nations most successful period in international cricket.
So as fans of the Indian cricket team, what can we expect from the ‘wall’ to bring to this side? Let’s find out.
TRUSTING THE PROCESS
With Rahul Dravid at the helm expect the word ‘process’ to be floated around extensively. That’s how Dravid goes about his business. He doesn’t take anything for granted and has different processes in place and expects his players to execute them on the field with full concentration. This may sound a bit weird but the results would become secondary under Dravid and it would be the process that would need to be followed in every game. This approach is almost the opposite of what India were practising under former coach Ravi Shastri where the emphasis was always laid on the result irrespective of the process.
In a post-match interview, India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin mentioned that the players expect Rahul Dravid to come up with meticulous planning and under him, nothing would be left to chance. Dravid has always been a shrewd planner from his days as the captain of the Indian cricket team and he would continue being the same as the head coach of this team. The planning under the previous management has come under scrutiny quite regularly as the players lacked role clarity going into big matches. Under Dravid, this should be on a different spectrum so much so that they should be wary of overplanning.
PROMOTION OF YOUTH
Dravid has been with the age ground sides and India A side for the past few years. He has a clear understanding of the young players coming through the ranks. This could be his biggest objective as the head coach, to breed young talent in this side. The key players in this team are reaching the wrong side of 30 very soon. It isn’t particularly a team in transition but could be in the next couple of years or so. Young players should be given enough opportunities to have a taste of international cricket before they are ready to replace these stalwarts in the side.
HOPEFULLY AN ICC TROPHY
If all the above points are followed then the team could very well expect an ICC trophy under the new head coach. It is something that the nation has been waiting for patiently for some time now. There would be plenty of pressure on Dravid and his team in these ICC tournaments and it won’t be easy as you need luck to be on your side as we’ve seen with the 2021 T20 World Cup. But India would have a great chance heading into these crucial tournaments under Dravid.
