Tactical Punts Each Indian T20 League Team Should Make In 2021

The think tank of an Indian T20 League team by now is massive. There are top professionals taken from different spectrums of the industry who come together to achieve a single objective, hoping to lead the team towards that coveted trophy by the end of the season.

T20 cricket is the most data-driven format of the sport. In every match, an Indian T20 League team is looking to gain an advantage over the opposition by using some sort of a tactical punt which may get them closer to the two points at the end.

Here in this blog, we’d look at tactical punts that every Indian T20 League team can try during the course of the 2021 season.

Use Kyle Jamieson only as a wicket-taker

Kyle Jamieson was a big-money buy for Team Bangalore ahead of the 2021 season. However, his price tag doesn’t reflect the kind of experience he has in the format. It would be unfair on the Kiwi pacer if the team was to give him the role of death bowling. This will be his first trip to India and it will be a steep learning process. He is a tall fast bowler who hits the deck hard and can deceive the batsman with the bounce he extracts from the surface. He is a genuine wicket-taker and should be used as one. He shouldn’t be burdened with the job of bowling in the death overs.

Make more use of Ravindra Jadeja the batsman

Ravindra Jadeja is a much-improved batsman than he was when he got in the Chennai team. Over the years he hasn’t been used effectively as a batter given the batting depth of his team. It will be criminal this season if his prowess with the bat isn’t used effectively. He should be Chennai’s floater and if he is given this level of freedom then he can win a few matches just by himself.

Use Ishant Sharma and Amit Mishra’s experience to full effect

Team Delhi have a deadly experienced combo of Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma in their ranks who bring bags of T20 cricket experience to the team. These two bowlers have seen it all over the years and with their bag of tricks could outfox any opposition batting line up.

Use Jonny Bairstow in the middle order

Jonny Bairstow is in tremendous form leading up to the tournament. Picking the four overseas players for Hyderabad has always been challenging. But given that Jonny is coming on the back of a successful limited-overs series in India, he becomes one of the first names on the team sheet. Using him in the middle order seems like the perfect opportunity for the English batsman to be at his best.

Have Eoin Morgan at number four

Eoin Morgan is into his first full season as a captain of an Indian T20 League team. There’s a tendency with Morgan that he wants to be the perfect leader and let others flourish under him. He chooses to uplift others and tends to take up the harder roles himself. But if Kolkata is to do well in the competition, their leader needs to bat at number four and have a stellar season on a personal note.

Use Piyush Chawla effectively

With 156 wickets in his Indian T20 League career, Piyush Chawla is the all-time third-highest wicket-taker in the competition. He has got a chance to get his hands on the trophy yet again as he is with the best team in the competition, Mumbai. The defending champions have a proper T20 specialist now in the spin department and should use him in conditions that allow him to flourish.

Use Jhye Richardson as a wicket-taker

Just like Kyle Jamieson, this will be Jhye Richardson’s first season in the Indian T20 League. He was also picked up for a hefty price at the auction and Punjab would be relying on him to be the main source of wickets in the season. He is excellent with the new ball and is always improving at the death as well. Punjab should reserve the death overs responsibility for bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh.

Use the all-round ability of Liam Livingstone

With the unfortunate news of Ben Stokes being ruled out of the competition, Team Rajasthan would be left scratching their heads about finding a possible replacement for the all-rounder. They have Liam Livingstone in the squad who was a shrewd pick at the auction. His experience in the middle-order and his ability to bowl both leg and off spin depending on the batsman should be used effectively this season.
