Remembering the Ruthless Partnership of Dhoni and Yuvraj for India Over the Years

When it comes to ruthless partnerships, every Indian fan will without fail mention Dhoni and Yuvraj. These two absolute beasts of the game were unbeatable when played together. Being one of the most successful batters of Indian cricket, both MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh have made memories as partners on the pitch. As we remember one of the deadliest partnerships of Indian cricket, let us look at some remarkable feats that these two men have achieved in their day.

Mahi-Yuvi combo with runs galore

In their years of playing together for India, Dhoni and Yuvraj have scored a whopping 3,105 runs together in ODI cricket, averaging 51.75. Both these hard-hitters have breached the 100-run mark a whopping 10 times and had a partnership of at least 50 runs 13 times.

Dhoni and Yuvraj salvage the game against Pakistan – 2006

India met Pakistan in the fifth ODI match in Karachi. The Men in Blue were looking forward to the fixture with great ambitions. However, things turned out differently as a stout Pakistan set the target of 287 runs for their arch-rivals. With Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly absent and with Rahul Dravid at the helm, India started solidly.

However, with the dismissal of Dravid and opener Gautam Gambhir, the score was 141/2 in the 31st over. Yuvraj, who was already on the pitch when Dravid got out, was joined by Dhoni to finish off the match. The dynamic duo did not waste time and wreaked havoc as they finished the game in the next 16 overs. Yuvraj completed his century and stood tall with 107* while Dhoni, playing a more supportive role, was 77* off 56 balls.

While Yuvraj Singh won Man of the Match and Man of the Series award, it was Dhoni who finished it off with two sixes followed by a single in the 47th over.

Yuvraj helps Dhoni to clinch the World Cup – 2011

One of those times when the Mahi-Yuvi partnership crossed 50 runs. In the 2011 World Cup final, where India faced Sri Lanka, the Men in Blue were in the driving seat when Gautam Gambhir lost his wicket at 233/4. The Lions were jubilant henceforth thinking the victory is nigh.

However, Yuvraj Singh stepped in to support Dhoni, who was at 60. Without wasting any time, both batters unleashed hell upon the Sri Lankan bowlers. In the next 18 deliveries, Dhoni smashed 31 runs while Yuvraj played a more supporting role for his momentum-carrying captain.

In 42 balls, both batters handed India their first World Cup since 1983 as Dhoni finished in style with a maximum.

Dhoni and Yuvraj, One last ride – 2017

Yuvraj Singh took time off from cricket after he was diagnosed with cancer. After three long years, he made a comeback to the Indian ODI team to face England in their tour of India in 2017. In the second ODI match, the Men in Blue saw themselves in turmoil as India lost early wickets very quickly. With the score 25/3 and the new captain Virat Kohli going out for just 8, it was upto Yuvraj and Dhoni to salvage the fixture.

The biggest and most destructive partnership between the two occurred in this match. Both Yuvraj and Dhoni began smashing the English bowlers left, right and centre as they turned back time. To the sheer delight of the spectators, the pair smashed 31 boundaries and nine maximums as they completed a 200-run partnership. Yuvraj, after beating cancer, smashed 150 off 127 balls before getting out in the 43rd over. Dhoni continued to punish the English bowlers and smashed 134 off 122 before losing his wicket in the 48th over.

From 25/3 to 381/6, India turned the match around with this monumental performance by Dhoni and Yuvraj as England would go on to lose this match by 15 runs. Yuvraj was awarded man of the match unquestionably as the sun set on one of the greatest partnerships seen in Indian cricket.
