Reasons Behind the Draft Picks By Lucknow and Ahmedabad For Indian T20 League 2022

The Indian T20 League 2022 fever has kicked in early as the two new franchises, Team Lucknow and Ahmedabad, recently announced their draft picks ahead of the mega auction. The two franchises have played it smart as they head into the auction, looking at securing their core around which they could build for the future.

Here are their six draft picks for the Indian T20 League 2022 season and the reasons which may have led to these selections.

KL Rahul (17 crores)
Marcus Stoinis (9.2 crores)
Ravi Bishnoi (4 crores)

Starting with the most expensive franchise in the history of the competition, Team Lucknow have played it smart going into the mega auction. Their draft picks have raised a few eyebrows for sure. Starting with KL Rahul, which was the worst kept secret of the previous few months as he was always going to be their first pick and would be the face of the franchise. The next two are where things get interesting.

The team has picked Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi as their other two picks from the draft and head into the auction with a mega purse of 58 crores. Dr Sanjeev Goenka, owner of the franchise explained the rationale behind these picks. The team went with players who could contribute to more than one facet of the game.

Rahul along with being a world-class batter is also a handy keeper in the T20 format and would be the captain of the franchise. Marcus Stoinis is a proper batting all-rounder who on a good day can give the team four overs. Stoinis is a lethal finisher as well as a dashing opener in the shortest format and his versatility with the bat will be key. Ravi Bishnoi is a value pick. Rahul has plenty of belief in the young leg-spinner and we’ve already seen in the past his electric fielding abilities.

Overall, the team has gone left-field when it comes to their two selections and it would be interesting to see their strategy for the mega auction.

Hardik Pandya (15 crores)

Rashid Khan (15 crores)

Shubman Gill (8 crores)

Team Ahmedabad have gone out and roped in a Gujarati captain in Hardik Pandya who would be leading an Indian T20 League franchise for the first time. Along with Hardik, they have gone for a world-class bowler in Rashid Khan and a bright future superstar in Shubman Gill.

It was obvious that the team would go for Pandya as it made cricketing as well as PR sense. But to appoint him as the captain is where they caught people off-guard. Pandya has a flashy personality outside of cricket but is a dedicated cricketer on the pitch and would be excited with his first stint as a captain. He has the backing of Gary Kirsten, a World Cup winning coach with Team India in 2011. Pandya has a point to prove this season as he seems to be out of favour from the national side and this added responsibility could do a world of good for the all-rounder.

Rashid Khan was a no-brainer for Ahmedabad. The moment Team Hyderabad announced his release, Rashid was bound to be one of the first picks for the two new franchises. In Rashid, they get the premier T20 bowler in the world and a handy lower-order dasher as well.

Shubman Gill is an interesting pick for the franchise. They were looking for a young Indian batter and eventually decided to go with Gill. The right-handed opener hasn’t taken the tournament by fire as was expected of him when he joined Team Kolkata in 2018. But he is just 22 years old and can vastly improve going forward. At Kolkata, he was being asked to play a fearless brand of cricket that he struggled to cope with. If given the space to figure out his game at the top of the order for his new franchise, we could see the best of Shubman in the Indian T20 League 2022 season.
