Indian cricket in 2021 soared to new heights. It all started with a remarkable series win in Australia, followed by a series lead in England. Their dominance at home is unparalleled. New players like Shreyas Iyer keep getting bred into the system and they don’t seem flustered by the pressure of international cricket. Indian cricket is abundant with batting talent and 2021 saw some remarkable Test batting craft on display.
Here we relive five of the best Test knocks we witnessed in 2021 by Indian batters.
RISHABH PANT – 89* vs AUSTRALIA | GABBA
A battered, bruised and depleted Indian side went to the final game at the Gabba with the series on the line. Fighting to win the game on the final day, Rishabh Pant walked into bat with 167/3 chasing 328 on a tough track in Brisbane. It seemed like an uphill battle for the Indian team but the young southpaw had different ideas. He took the attack to the Aussie bowlers at their fortress and Tim Panie’s team crumbled. He scored a magnificent 89*, batting for more than three hours and scripted history for Team India.
ROHIT SHARMA – 127 vs ENGLAND | THE OVAL
Before the Test series in England, Rohit Sharma’s credentials as a Test batter were in serious doubt. He was labelled as a bully at home and his overseas record wasn’t one to be impressed with. But this all changed in England, conditions that are probably the toughest in the world for an opening batter, Sharma excelled with flying colours.
He got his reward at the Oval as his display of patience and class got Rohit Sharma his first overseas Test century and helped India pull off a remarkable win.
KL RAHUL – 129 vs ENGLAND | LORD’S
Sticking to India’s tour of England, Rohit Sharma’s opening partner, KL Rahul got his name on the Lord’s honours board. He scored a majestic century in the first innings of the second Test and put India in a commanding position. He emerged as India’s second-highest run-getter on the England tour and was a key catalyst in their 1-2 lead on the tour with one match to go.
MAYANK AGARWAL – 150 vs NEW ZEALAND | MUMBAI
It seems like India’s openers had a gala time in 2021 and Mayank Agarwal enjoyed his time against New Zealand in the home series. On a tricky track at the Wankhede, Mayank showed his true abilities against spin. Amongst the current crop, Mayank is one of the best players of spin. In the innings which will forever be known for Ajaz Patel’s ten-wicket haul, Mayank’s hundred and fifty should not be forgotten.
SHREYAS IYER – 105 vs NEW ZEALAND | KANPUR
In the first match of the series against New Zealand, Shreyas Iyer was given an unexpected Test debut. Iyer has always dreamed of getting a Test cap for India and his dream came true in Kanpur. Once he got his cap, he made sure to leave a mark on this Test team. He scored a century on debut and followed it up with a classy half-century in the second innings. He became the first Indian to score a century and half-century on his debut Test and the 16th overall in the world.
