India’s Top Performers Excluded From the 2022 T20 World Cup Squad

The BCCI announced the Indian squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup. The 15-man squad appears to be complete. However, the fact that some top-performing players were excluded from the squad to make way for seniors is something that might leave the fans perplexed. We ponder the pros and cons of the squad selected for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Top misses

India will see players like KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda play over the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan, batters who have far superior stats in T20I cricket this year. Iyer is currently India’s second-best batter based on statistics for 2022. He was excluded for reasons unknown. However, one reason that appears to be plausible for this move is the return of India’s vice-captain KL Rahul. Iyer has smashed 449 runs for the Men in Blue in 2022, including a memorable spell against Sri Lanka earlier this year. Still, he was omitted from the squad.

Kishan, who scored 430 runs in 14 innings for India in 2022, including three fifties, was left out for Hooda, who has scored 293 runs in nine innings, including a hundred against Ireland. While having a plethora of bowlers in the squad, Hooda’s preference over Kishan could well be because of his spin bowling over Kishan’s keeper-batter trait.

However, Kishan’s exclusion should be seen as a miss as the Men in Blue comprise seasoned veterans in spin bowling such as Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel. Having another spinner in the form of an all-rounder over an aggressive batter seems like a big miss. Especially when the vice-captain KL Rahul’s impact as a top-order batter in big matches has been subpar.

The selection of Dinesh Karthik over Sanju Samson is also a questionable decision. Samson, having played seven innings less, has amassed a total of 179 runs, just 14 runs short of Karthik’s tally. Samson should’ve been the ideal preference over the 37-year-old but has failed to make the cut. While we can contemplate as much as we want about the reason behind this decision, the truth remains that Samson’s statistics show that he is a better batter at the moment than DK.

Another potential miss could be the preference of Ravichandran Ashwin over Ravi Bishnoi. Bishnoi has been prolific since his debut earlier this year. The 22-year-old has scalped 16 wickets so far in 10 innings, averaging just 17.12 runs per wicket. Whereas Ashwin has averaged 27.80 runs per wicket, with five wickets in five innings. The 36-year-old has conceded roughly 10 more runs per wicket than Bishnoi, which is something India should not have risked in T20 cricket, especially in the World Cup.

Top hits

Virat Kohli is in the limelight following an impressive 2022 Asia Cup, where he scored two fifties and his first T20I century. After a month-long break from cricket, the former captain returned to his top form with the masses expecting him to do the same in the T20 World Cup. Another batter in top form is Suryakumar Yadav, currently India’s best batter. He is the highest-ranked Indian batter in T20 cricket as per the ICC. However, he couldn’t do much in the Asia Cup with just one brilliant performance.

Regardless, both Kohli and Yadav are fancied to display their top form in the T20 World Cup. They are currently India’s two of the best batters who will be looked up to for crucial runs. No room for complacency for these two as it can deal a fatal blow to India’s hopes.

One of the top hits in the bowling department is undeniably the return of Jasprit Bumrah. In his absence, we saw the rise of Bhuvneshwar Kumar after a splendid performance in the Asia Cup. Kumar ended his campaign with the most wickets in the tournament (11). Dubbed the ‘Swing King’, Bhuvneshwar is seen as a crucial seamer for India. Moreover, with the return of Bumrah, India’s bowling attack looks sublime, comprising two of the best seamers for the Men in Blue.

What can we expect in the T20 World Cup?

With almost the entire T20 World Cup squad playing against Australia and South Africa in the upcoming T20I series, it will give us a fair idea as to what the squad is capable of. Jasprit Bumrah will be seen back in action for the first time since the England tour, which is something most fans will look forward to. Virat Kohli’s return to top form will be tested once again against the reigning T20 champions Australia.

Many will be eager to see how skipper Rohit Sharma plays as his inconsistent form remains a topic of interest. It’s high time for the Indian captain to step up his game ahead of the T20 World Cup.
