Yuvraj Singh to Stokes: Most Expensive Players Over The Years

The Indian T20 League is known for making millionaires in a matter of seconds. We’ve seen over the past years, players going for exorbitant salaries and failing to have an impact on the field. The price tag does play a massive role in the mindset of some individuals, prime examples being Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir.

In this blog, we’d look at the five most expensive players before the 2021 Indian T20 League and how they performed under tremendous pressure given the money they were receiving.

16 Crores | Team Delhi | 2015

Yuvraj Singh is known as one of the cleanest strikers of the cricket ball this country has ever produced. His impact on the global stage has been phenomenal as he played a key role in India’s two World Cup wins back in 2007 and 2011.

In 2015, he came into the competition on the back of decent performances in the previous season. This year he went on to break the record of being the most expensive player bought at an auction. Yuvi had a forgettable campaign as he managed to score only 248 runs at a modest average of 19.07. Team Delhi had a woeful season as their star player failed to make it big.

15.5 Crores | Team Kolkata | 2020

It’s impossible for a fast bowler to justify the price tag of 15.5 crores and Pat Cummins struggled with exactly that in the previous season. His inflated price was the result of a mini-auction in 2020 and he was one of the star players coming into the auction.

He had a recent campaign with the ball and with the bat was a pleasant surprise. He picked up 12 wickets and contributed to 146 runs throughout the campaign. Kolkata just missed out on the playoff spot due to a poor net run rate and finished fifth in the table.

14.9 Crores |Team Kolkata | 2011

Gautam Gambhir has famously told his story about how the high price tag had an impact on his mindset and he gave the money back to the owners in his last season with Team Delhi

Gauti was picked for an exceptionally high amount by Team Kolkata as they were looking to find a charismatic leader. Gautam proved exactly that as he led the side to glory just a year later and one again in 2014. He had a decent campaign in 2011 with the bat and took his side to the playoffs in that year as well.

14.5 Crores | Team Pune | 2017

Ben Stokes had a remarkable campaign in 2017 and it seemed like the high price tag actually got the best out of the English all-rounder. He only played 12 games in his side’s run in to the final of the 2017 Indian T20 League which was lost by the barest of margins.

That was Stokes’ first campaign in the league and stands to date as his personal best. He scored 316 runs in 12 matches at an average of 31.60 and a strike rate of 142.98. With the ball too he was brilliant, picking up 12 wickets in the league stage.

14 Crores | Team Bangalore | 2014

Yuvraj Singh was picked up by Team Bangalore in 2014 to form their own ‘Galacticos’. The batting line up of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Yuvraj Singh seemed too good on paper and started the tournament as favourites.

But the bowling department struggled to defend totals at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and it ended up in yet another forgettable season for the team in red. However, Yuvraj did his part in that season, with 376 runs in 14 matches remaining his personal best season in the Indian T20 League.
