In a recent move, Delhi’s team management have handed over the responsibility of captaining the side this Indian T20 League season to India’s wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant. Following Shreyas Iyer’s unfortunate injury in the first ODI against England at Pune, Team Delhi were left sweating for his fitness results and it was later discovered that Iyer had dislocated his shoulder and was ruled out of the 2021 Indian T20 League.
Pant seems the perfect replacement for Iyer and here are five reasons why he can be a successful leader this season.
YOUNG AND EXUBERANT
Rishabh Pant is just 23-years-old and already has valuable experience both at the international and the domestic level. This will be his sixth season with Team Delhi in the Indian T20 League and for someone of his age, that is more than a handful of experience before captaincy is handed over to him. He has played his age-group cricket in Delhi and has been with the Delhi franchise for the past five years now. He is an out-and-out Delhi boy and fans would love to see him lead his side out in the centre.
OPEN TO KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER
Ever since Ricky Ponting took over Team Delhi in 2019, it has become quite evident that he is the man who is running the show. We’ve seen plenty of instances where Ponting has even made some bowling changes or moved a few fielders from the dugout itself. He had a young captain in Shreyas Iyer under his wings and the former Australian captain was doing a great job of grooming the young leader.
Now that Pant is the new captain, expect the equation between the captain and the coach to remain pretty much the same. Pant hasn’t led a team yet and with Ponting’s world of experience, it will be a great start for the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman to learn from.
A MAINSTAY IN THE XI
It is imperative that when a side chooses a captain before a season, that player should be an automatic choice in the XI and should be good enough to play all the games in the league. Time and again we’ve seen franchises pick overseas captains and in the midseason, they’d have to find an Indian replacement for the captaincy position.
With Pant it is quite different. He is one of the first names in the starting XI and is certain to play all the games in the coming season. Pant is also in the form of his life and his top performances with the bat will certainly help his leadership style on the field.
WICKETKEEPER ALWAYS MAKE GOOD CAPTAINS
Throughout history, you’d find that wicketkeepers always make brilliant captains. It’s mainly because of their position behind the stumps that they are always involved in the game and read the game situation better than any other player on the field. They constantly look at what the batsman is trying to do and help guide the bowlers from behind the stumps. A wicketkeeper is usually the second captain of the team because he is the one who makes sure that each fielder is in a perfect position. That’s predominantly why they make such good captains in cricket.
ALWAYS INVOLVED IN THE GAME
We’ve seen that in international as well as in domestic cricket Rishabh Pant is never shy of giving the bowler a word of advice from behind the stumps. He is always the one encouraging the players at all moments irrespective of the match situation. He keeps the morale of the team high and keeps the atmosphere on the field light. He is quite quirky from behind the stumps and is regularly coming up with witty names for his bowlers. He is constantly trying to understand the game situation and his plans do come in handy time and again. Those are some of the important qualities that a captain should possess.
