Uthappa to Sams: Top Player Trades in Indian T20 League 2021

Player trades before the season can usually swing the tide in the favour of a team. Shrewd picks before the auction can give a head start to a team and they can build their auction strategy accordingly. This season, we saw just three-player trades in action as Robin Uthappa moved base from Rajasthan to Chennai while Harshal Patel and Daniel Sams were both taken off Delhi’s books and moved to the perennial underachievers, Team Bangalore.

Here in this piece, we’d look at all three players and what sort of a role can they play for their new franchise.

ROBIN UTHAPPA (Team Chennai)

Robin Uthappa is talking a big game before the season as in one of the recent interviews he mentioned that he wants to break the 1000 runs barrier in this season’s Indian T20 League. Uthappa has been around since the inception of the league and now comes in with plenty of valuable T20 experience in his bag. He is joining a side in Chennai which is filled with batsmen with experience of playing at the highest level and Uthappa will surely add to the think tank.

Last season, with Rajasthan, he struggled in the beginning when he was given the role of a middle-order batsman but flourished when the team gave him his natural T20 position at the top of the order. We saw the best of the Karnataka batsman when he was opening alongside Gautam Gambhir for Team Kolkata in the 2014 season where he stacked up more than 600 runs in the season. Uthappa is best used as an opener when he has the license to go big in the powerplay overs and expect Chennai to use him effectively at that position.

HARSHAL PATEL (Team Bangalore)

The captain of his state team Haryana, Harshal Patel so far has failed to show his best in the Indian T20 League. He has moved back to a familiar unit in Bangalore this time as a new and improved cricketer. Harshal’s ability with the bat is underrated and can contribute to more than handy runs at number seven. With him, in the XI the Bangalore batsmen would be able to play without fear as they’d know that they bat deep unlike the previous season.

He is a willy customer with the ball and again his skill as a bowler has improved as well. He isn’t a regular four overs bowler but on his day can do that job as well. Overall with Harshal Patel, Bangalore have an all-rounder who can be devastating with both bat and ball.

DANIEL SAMS (Team Bangalore)

The Aussie fast bowling all-rounder has been one of the most underrated picks of the Indian T20 League 2021. The 28-year old has a golden left arm and can swing it both ways with the new ball. He played in the Indian T20 League three times in the previous season with Team Delhi and has plenty of game time in various leagues around the world.

His batting prowess has come leaps and bounds. He has the ability to go berserk at the back end of the innings and for this, he credits the great Ricky Ponting. In T20 cricket, he strikes at almost 150.00 and his average with the ball is around 22.00. In the recent T20Is, he played against New Zealand he showed his improved ability with the bat and struck at over 200. With the ball, he is a genuine wicket-taker and a left-arm pacer in T20 cricket is always considered as someone extremely special. He seems the perfect number eight player for Team Bangalore and should be amongst the wickets with the new ball as well.
