Now that the Indian T20 League has expanded to ten teams, the question that a few fans have been debating in their cricketing circles is whether the league should have five playoff spots going ahead in the future? There is some credence to the argument and here are our points to back this change.
THE FORMAT ITSELF IS ASKING THIS QUESTION
The format that is being used in the 2022 season is only the second time in the league’s history that the organising committee has gone ahead with it. The last time was in 2011 when there were ten teams exactly like the current season. There are two groups and the teams play each team in their group twice, one team from the other group twice and the remaining four teams from that group once. Some franchisees have complained about the skewing of the fixtures as it comes down to the luck of the draw and having that another playoff spot reserved for the fifth best team reduces this luck factor.
COMMERCIAL VALUE OF ANOTHER PLAYOFF MATCH
Most sports leagues from around the world are pushing for more playoff matches as there’s more riding on in these games. The value in terms of the broadcasting money is higher for a playoff match as compared to a league game. Having another playoff match can help the BCCI sell the media rights for an even higher amount as the broadcasters surely will entertain this idea.
NO MORE DEAD RUBBERS
In the current format, there are bound to be two or three teams that are out of contention for a playoff spot just two-thirds of the way in the season. Like we’ve witnessed this season, historically strong teams in Chennai and Mumbai post the halfway mark couldn’t qualify for the playoff anymore given the poor start they sustained in the beginning. So having another spot in the playoffs will ensure that most teams will be in the race for the knockouts and there won’t be any more dead rubbers in the league stage.
DON’T HAVE TO CALCULATE NRR ANYMORE
There have been several seasons in the past where the fifth team in the points table has missed out on a playoff spot on Net Run Rate (NRR). Calculating the NRR is a tough task in itself and after a gruelling season in the league, missing out on a playoff spot due to a run or two seems a bit harsh. This way the best five teams in the competition have a chance to try their luck in the knockout stage of the competition.
