McDermott to Conway: International Players Looking for Maiden Indian T20 League Contract

Indian T20 League is a competition that attracts the cream of international players. Cricketers from all across the globe have this dream of playing in the league. But only four foreigners are allowed in the playing XI and that hinders the possibility of getting a contract for some overseas players. The Indian T20 League franchises have a solid scouting base, and when players like Ben McDermott or Devon Conway shine in any competition, these franchises take notice.

In this piece, we’ll be focusing on five overseas players who have done well in the past to earn their maiden Indian T20 League contract.

BEN MCDERMOTT (Australia)

Son of former Australian great Craig McDermott, Ben McDermott has been around the cricketing circle for quite some time now. This Big Bash was his standout moment when he emerged as the league’s highest run-getter. He created history by becoming the first player in the Big Bash to score back-to-back tons. He has had a taste of international cricket previously which can come in handy at a competition like the Indian T20 League. He is a wicket-keeper batter who can bat anywhere in the middle order.

DARYL MITCHELL (New Zealand)

An unorthodox dashing opener who did well in the T20 World Cup, Daryl Mitchell should be on the radar of a few franchises in the mega auction. The beauty about Mitchell is that he is a batting all-rounder who on his day can deliver four tight overs. We’ve seen him being used as a death over specialist by the Kiwis in limited-overs cricket. Mitchell is a fighter and such a character is important in a team trying to win the championship.

RASSIE VAN DER DUSSEN (South Africa)

Rassie van der Dussen almost made his Indian T20 League debut in the second half of the 2021 season but wasn’t granted permission by Cricket South Africa. He had a good limited-overs series against India back home in South Africa and it won’t be surprising to see him get a deal in the mega auction.

CHAMIKA KARUNARATNE (Sri Lanka)

Sri Lanka has been producing some top talents and Chamika Karunaratne has been one of their standout performers in the past few years. The bowling all-rounder brings a unique skill to the auction that is highly valuable for any T20 side. He was brilliant back in 2021 when India toured Sri Lanka, so that could prove to be beneficial for the all-rounder in this auction.

DEVON CONWAY (New Zealand)

Devon Conway’s introduction to international cricket has been nothing short of spectacular. The South African born batter has a stellar record in T20I cricket, where he averages more than 50. He can also keep wickets and that would be in his favour as many franchises are on the lookout for a keeper-batter. Conway is a versatile batter, he can be devastating top of the order and at the same time, has a good aggressive play against spin in the middle overs. He could be a value pick for many franchises and an x-factor player in the season.
