Ishant Sharma To Alzarri Joseph: Top Five Bowling Performances in the Indian T20 League

Since its induction, the Indian T20 League has become an obsession for cricket lovers all over India. Every season a new record is made. Initially, the Indian T20 League was all for the batsmen and their glory, but as the seasons advanced bowlers have slowly started to get their share of the limelight with their performances. There were matches in which a single bowler changed the face of the game with their bowling. Understanding its importance, many franchises have started concentrating on bowling prowess.

The League has given a chance for rookie bowlers to showcase their talent and skills. A three-wicket haul with an economy of fewer than seven runs is considered a significant performance, and in the Indian T20 League many bowlers both legends and rookies alike have achieved it many times.

Indian T20 League has witnessed 17 five-wicket hauls and 3 six-wicket hauls in 12 seasons so far. There are more than 100 bowlers who have shined with their performance in these 12 seasons, here we look at the top five bowling performances which have mesmerised cricket fans with their stellar performance:

#1: Alzarri Joseph: 6/12

Alzarri Joseph has bagged first place in the list with his performance against Team Hyderabad in 2019. The West Indies domestic bowler took six wickets for 12 runs against Hyderabad on his debut for Team Mumbai. Mumbai has set a target of 137 runs for Hyderabad, but the batting team could not hold against the bowling spree of the Antiguan and settled for 96 runs.

#2: Sohail Tanvir: 6/14

Pakistani pacer Sohail Tanvir took six wickets for 14 runs against Team Chennai for Team Rajasthan during the 2008 edition of the Indian T20 League. Tanvir also went on to become the highest wicket-taker in the first edition of the Indian T20 League with 22 wickets in 11 matches and played an important role in Team Rajasthan’s maiden title season.

#3: Adam Zampa: 6/19

Adam Zampa, in only his second match of the Indian T20 League against Team Hyderabad in 2016, made history by taking six wickets for 19 runs. He is the only bowler in the history of the Indian T20 League to take six wickets in a single innings after Sohail Tanvir. He played a major role in restricting Team Hyderabad to a total of 137/8 in 20 overs. Despite the terrific bowling performance from Zampa, Team Chennai lost the match to Team Hyderabad with 133/8.

#4: Anil Kumble: 5/5

Our very own leg spinner and former Team India Captain’s performance in the 2009 edition of the Indian T20 League still holds the record for the most economic five-wicket haul. He took five wickets against Team Rajasthan while giving away just 5 runs in 3.1 overs. Kumble’s bowling spree has forced Rajasthan to accept defeat with just 58 runs while chasing 134, the lowest innings total then, and second-lowest in the Indian T20 League history.

#5: Ishant Sharma: 5/12

Ishant Sharma is fifth on the list for his performance in 2011 against Team Kochi when he took five wickets giving away 12 runs. Team Hyderabad, then known by another name, has set a target of 130 runs for Kochi in 20 overs, but Ishant’s bowling has made it difficult for Kochi to even reach 74 runs in the innings. His extraordinary bowling skills bagged him the Man of the Match title.
