Indian T20 League: Teams Who Might Be Interested In Signing Rashid Khan

Ahead of the mega auction set to take place in the coming weeks, franchises in the Indian T20 League are busy figuring out their strategies to get the most talented lineup for themselves. One of the most exciting prospects up for auction is Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, who has made a name for himself in the shortest format of the game with his economical bowling and wicket-taking abilities.

Rashid Khan joined Team Hyderabad in 2017 for a meagre price of 4 crores. After his dazzling displays with the ball, the spinner’s value went up in the 2018 auction, when Team Hyderabad had to use their Right-To-Match option to retain him for 9 crores. Rashid Khan has played 76 matches over five years for the team, picking up 93 wickets at an outstanding economy rate of 6.33. His ability to slow down the innings during the middle overs has enabled Team Hyderabad to win many fixtures based on their bowling prowess alone.

As the franchises gear up for auction for the 2022 Indian T20 League, we take a look at clubs that have an eye on Rashid Khan:

Team Hyderabad’s decision not to retain one of their main players after their fallout with David Warner has generated much talk among the fans about possible reasons. But it is now clear that Rashid Khan was unhappy with not being Team Hyderabad’s primary choice, with that spot going to their skipper Kane Williamson.

Rashid Khan has been one of the key players around whom the management has built their team, and they would be keen to pick him back up at the auction at the right price. Unless other franchises are willing to spend big bucks for the talented spinner, Rashid Khan is likely to have an automatic spot in the Team Hyderabad lineup.

But Team Hyderabad have taken a big gamble by retaining just one of their three key players, and if they fail to pick up the Afghanistan spinner in the auction, they would have to build a solid team to improve their prospects in the league.

Two new teams – Team Lucknow and Team Ahmedabad – will be joining the Indian T20 League next year, expanding the tournament. As both teams are new entrants into the league, the BCCI has given them the option to pick three players each from the draft of players after the retention. It is now clear that Team Lucknow have expressed an interest in going after both KL Rahul and Rashid Khan, with the franchise willing to loosen up the purse strings to have big names among its squad.

For Rashid Khan, Team Lucknow will provide an opportunity to make a fresh start as the spinner has spent his entire Indian T20 League career with just one team so far. But the prospect of fetching a big price at the auction might prevent Rashid Khan from signing up with Team Lucknow before the auction date, and they have to spill out a significant sum if they want the services of the star spinner.

Virat Kohli’s Team Bangalore are another franchise that might be looking at hiring the Afghan spinner. Team Bangalore’s already star-studded lineup will be enhanced by the entry of Rashid Khan, who could be the central pillar of their bowling lineup. The franchise already has a tough task on their hands to pick a worthy successor to Virat Kohli, and the presence of an experienced bowler can ease the transition smoothly.

Yuzvendra Chahal was the only spinner of note to play for Team Bangalore in recent years. Team Bangalore’s decision to release Chahal thus points to a shift in thinking among the management, who will be looking to completely redo their bowling attack. For Rashid Khan, joining the ranks of Team Bangalore will give him the ability to play with the best of the best, and the opportunity to win a title with the team.

Apart from Team Chennai, Team Kolkata are the only side that have favoured a spin-oriented bowling approach in the Indian T20 League. Team Kolkata have retained both Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, emphasising their focus on building a solid spin department. Rashid Khan can join Narine and Chakravarthy to form a solid spin trio, effectively containing the opposition from running away with the score during the middle overs.

Team Kolkata have retained four players, and thus have just 48 crores remaining in their purse for the auction. With Rashid Khan’s price likely to go up into the double digits, it remains to be seen if Team Kolkata can afford to compete with other teams in their quest for the spinner.
