With the 2022 Indian T20 League mega auction just around the corner, all eyes are on the 590 players that will go under the hammer over the course of the two days. Even though 590 players have registered for the auction, there are few big names like Chris Gayle or Mitchell Starc who have decided against giving their names for the auction.
In this piece, we’re looking at five such marquee players who have had a significant impact on the competition previously but won’t feature in the 2022 season.
The self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle has decided to opt-out of the 2022 Indian T20 League season. With Gayle turning 43 this year, it is safe to assume that we won’t see the Jamaican in the league again. This will be the first since the inception of the league that the tournament won’t witness a Gayle Storm. No matter how it ended for the opener, he will forever remain an Indian T20 League great.
AB DE VILLIERS
Talking about Indian T20 League greats, AB de Villiers’ name is right up there with the very best of the world. It was always feared that Mr 360 has had enough of professional cricket and that’s what transpired last year when he announced his retirement from all formats. A Team Bangalore great, AB has thoroughly entertained the Indian public with his exploits in the league.
Ben Stokes is one of the premier all-rounders in the world currently but is just coming back to normal cricket. We saw during the recently-concluded Ashes series that Stokes kept breaking down and is far off from his top fitness. Hence this decision not to be a part of the 2022 Indian T20 League came about. Stokes won’t feature in this mega auction and it could be a blessing in disguise for the English all-rounder as he might give his name in the next season’s auction and as we’ve seen previously, the prices inflate dramatically in a small auction.
Another Englishman who has plenty of fitness issues is their fast bowler, Jofra Archer. His case is an interesting one to dissect. Jofra has given his name for the mega auction but won’t be available for the season in March. If a franchise was to pick him, they would pick him for the future based on his previous performances.
Mitchell Starc has always been one player who the franchise owners would love to splash the cash around on but he never seems to be available for the tournament. Yet again, Starc has decided against giving his name for the auction. That is seven years in a row that he won’t play in the Indian T20 League. He wishes to keep his body fit for international cricket hence doesn’t want to go through a gruelling season of the Indian T20 League.
