The Indian T20 League is famous for producing various rags to riches stories over the past few years. Such are the auction dynamics that one can’t predict who the next lucky player will be. Deepak Chahar, for example, was bought for 80 lakhs in the 2021 season and not even within one year, the same player was picked for 14 crores by the same franchise. These price tags were unheard of in the earlier years but with the way the game has progressed, cricketers are bound to become overnight millionaires now.
Here in this list, we’ve picked the top five gainers from the 2022 mega auction. We’ve compared the wages they were being paid in 2021 to the money they have been bought for in the 2022 season.
FROM Rs 80 LAKHS TO Rs 14 CR
Deepak Chahar was easily the biggest gainer from this mega auction. The swing bowler was picked for a massive price tag of 14 crores by Team Chennai. Chahar was rewarded for his exploits with the national team. His batting ability has gone up a notch and has become a handy option at number 8 for any team.
He was always a strong powerplay bowler and was an integral part of the championship-winning side in 2021. Chennai ensured that no matter what the figure was, Chahar had to be back in the yellow of Chennai.
FROM Rs 75 LAKHS TO Rs 11.5 CR
Liam Livingstone is still an untested entity in the Indian T20 League but his price tag of 11.5 crores isn’t surprising. He has been in remarkable form in the T20 format over the past year or so and Team Punjab valued him highly in this auction.
He was playing for Rajasthan in 2021 for just 75 lakhs but in 2022 he has seen a gain of 10.75 crores. That is a big jump for the English all-rounder and Team Punjab would be hoping for him to come good in the upcoming season with both bat and ball.
FROM Rs 20 LAKHS TO Rs 10.75 CR
‘Purple Patel’ as he is known by the Indian T20 League fans had to be a big buy in this auction given his record-breaking season in 2021. Team Bangalore could have easily retained him for a way cheaper price but the team wanted him to go to the auction and get his actual worth.
It was a special day for the Haryana pacer as previously he had always been picked for his base price but all of a sudden he saw almost a 5000% upside in his valuation. Patel is a handy batter as well lower down the order and with the burden of such a big price tag, there’ll be plenty riding on him in the current season.
FROM Rs 50 LAKHS TO Rs 10.75 CR
Team Bangalore seemed on a mission to make overnight millionaires in this auction as they helped Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Wanindu Hasaranga’s value go up by 10.25 crores in 2022. Bangalore retained the services of Hasaranga at the auction for 10.75 crores and along with Harshal, he became their costliest signing of the summer.
Bangalore would be looking at the Sri Lankan to be a like for like replacement of Yuzvendra Chahal with the ball and become their finisher alongside Dinesh Karthik at number 7. The Indian T20 League is yet to see what Hasaranga is capable of achieving but there is plenty of potential in the player.
FROM Rs 20 LAKHS TO Rs 10 CR
After a breakthrough season with the Indian national team, fast bowler Prasidh Krishna was in high demand in the 2022 auction. Indian fast bowlers who can bowl over 140 kmph are a rare commodity in the auction hence their prices are sky-high.
Krishna who was playing for Team Kolkata for just 20 lakhs in the 2021 season was picked by Team Rajasthan for 10 crores in the auction. Prasidh has impressed in his young international career so far and would compliment the likes of Trent Boult superbly for his new franchise.
