Chahal to Conway: Steal Picks from 2022 Mega Auction

More often than not, the mega bids make the headlines in the Indian T20 League auction, but the shrewd picks are the ones that make the difference. The value picks, like picking Yuzvendra Chahal for just 6.5 crores when in the mock auctions the team would have kept a purse of at least 10 crores for someone of Chahal’s quality, allows the franchise to go crazy on a few players.

It’s all about getting the price right at the auction table and with the below mentioned five players, the franchises certainly got a great deal. Let’s find out who the top five steal picks are from the 2022 mega auction.

YUZVENDRA CHAHAL | Rs 6.5 CR | TEAM RAJASTHAN

It was surprising to see Team Bangalore not even raise the paddle once for Yuzvendra Chahal. The Indian leg-spinner is a legend for that franchise and it was shocking to see him being released in the first place and then no intent of buying him back at the auction. Nevertheless, Team Rajasthan would be delighted with the way it panned out for them as they picked up the leggie for just 6.5 crores.

Chahal has a bag of tricks up his sleeves and even at a ground like the Chinnaswamy, he has performed exceptionally well. He would love the opportunity to bowl at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur where the boundaries are long enough for him to toss the ball up. Rajasthan fans would be hoping to see him string together a successful partnership with fellow Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Getting someone of Chahal’s quality for that price has to be the shock of the auction this year.

QUINTON DE KOCK | Rs 6.75 CR | TEAM LUCKNOW

Quinton de Kock was bound to be one of the most expensive picks of the auction this season given his skill sets. De Kock is an aggressive top-order batter who keeps wickets as well. So getting him for just 6.75 crores makes Team Lucknow pretty solid. Just for comparison, Ishan Kishan who has pretty much the same skills as de Kock, went for over 15 crores. That is more than double the value of Quinton. So this has to be one of the steal deals of the season.

Lucknow fans would be eager to see what sort of a partnership the South African will have with their captain KL Rahul at the top of the order. Both these batters are capable of playing aggressive cricket from the first ball and at the same time can take the game deep as well.

DAVID WARNER | Rs 6.25 CR | TEAM DELHI

Sticking with an overseas top-order batter, David Warner was one to look out for in this mega auction and sealing the deal for the Australian batter for just 6.25 crores would make the owners of Team Delhi a delighted bunch. Picking the man who won the Player of the Tournament award in the recently concluded T20 World Cup for just a shade over 6 crores has to be one of the deals of the season.

The thoughts of Warner forming an opening partnership with Prithvi Shaw seems too good to be true. It seems like the best opening partnership in this season’s Indian T20 League as of now and expect plenty of entertainment from the duo.

JASON ROY | Rs 2 CR | TEAM GUJARAT

Jason Roy has been in fine form in the ongoing Pakistan Super League and picking him at his base price of 2 crores is outstanding. Team Gujarat in their first-ever auction had a mixed time but they surely can be happy with how the bidding for Jason Roy went.

There are murmurs that the 2022 Indian T20 League may be played around Mumbai because of the pandemic. Roy has exactly the technique needed to be successful at the Wankhede Stadium and surely would be amongst the top run-getters this season.

DEVON CONWAY | Rs 1 CR | TEAM CHENNAI

Team Chennai were disappointed when they couldn’t buy back Faf du Plessis, who had been a loyal servant to the franchise for almost a decade. But his replacement in New Zealand’s Devon Conway would bring optimism amongst the Chennai fanbase.

Conway has had a superb start to life in international cricket. He is a versatile batter and can even bat in the middle order. Chennai picked him up for his base price of just 1 crore in the accelerated part of the auction on Day 2. Conway would love this opportunity to don the yellow of Chennai and have a debut season to remember in the Indian T20 League.
