India vs West Indies Series: ODI and T20I Squad Analysis

The India vs West Indies series is about to kick off from February 6 and the good news for Indian cricket is that Rohit Sharma is back fit and would lead the side in this limited-over series. The series includes three ODIs and three T20Is split between Ahmedabad and Kolkata, respectively.

The selectors recently announced the squads for both the formats and here’s how they are shaping up.

ODI

After a 3-0 drubbing in South Africa in the format, Team India would be hoping for a better showing in this home series against the Windies. Captain Rohit Sharma is back and so is Kuldeep Yadav who has been out of action for the last six months. The lack of a wicket-taking spinner in the middle overs was a key concern for the team management and it looks like they have gone back to the strategy of having two wrist spinners in tandem as their best wicket-taking options.

Vice-captain KL Rahul will miss the first ODI but will be available for the rest of the series. Senior fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have been given a well-deserved rest. Swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar who had a torrid time in South Africa has been axed from the ODI squad and Avesh Khan has been given an opportunity to showcase his skills in 50-over cricket.

Ishan Kishan, Venkatesh Iyer, R Ashwin and Jayant Yadav have all been excluded from the ODI squad for India vs West Indies. Young wrist-spinner Ravi Bishnoi and all-rounder Deepak Hooda have received their maiden call up to the national squad. Also, Washington Sundar seems to have recovered from Covid and hence is back in the 18-man squad.

ODI squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Surya Kumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan

T20I

With the T20I World Cup coming up later in the year, the team would be looking at these three matches as the perfect start for their build-up to the competition. West Indies are coming into the series after a successful series win at home against England. So India would have to be at the top of their game to beat the visitors.

The T20I side is pretty much similar to the ODI squad. Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar retains his spot in the format but R Ashwin and Ruturaj Gaikwad are not included in this T20I squad. It seems like the experiment of getting Ashwin back in the white-ball setup is over since Washington Sundar is back in action. Young wrist spinner, Ravi Bishnoi who was a draft pick for the new Indian T20 League franchise Team Lucknow, has made it to the T20I squad as well.

T20I squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-captain), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Surya Kumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel
