Major Talking points from Week 3 of Hero ISL 2022-23

After the second gameweek of Hero ISL 2022-23 that saw a lot of goals and many firsts, gameweek three had a lot of surprises in store.

Here we look at what went down in Gameweek 3 of Hero ISL 2022-23.

East Bengal FC hit a three-pointer

It took three competitive games for the newly-appointed East Bengal FC coach, Stephen Constantine to get any points on the board. The Bengal giants set the tone for the week of Diwali soon enough as they struck the first in the 11th minute through Cleiton Silva.

Charalampos Kyriakou doubled the visitors lead with a scorching effort from distance, soon after the restart. Jordan O’Doherty from Australia made sure that his team returned with maximum points after he buried it past Northeast United’s Arindam Bhattacharja in the 83rd minute.

Northeast United managed to find a consolation in stoppage time through Matt Derbyshire’s thumping header at the near post.

Six-in-Six

FC Goa paid a visit to their arch rivals in Chennai. The Gaurs carried momentum with them as their opponents and the hosts for the night, Chennaiyin FC looked a little unstable in the league standings.

Redeem Tlang nodded it past the debutant between the sticks, Devansh Dabas, to give Goa an early lead. Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem was stretchered out of the field as he took several blows to his body whilst making some brilliant saves.

Goa’s number-7, Noah Sadaoui put his stamp on the game with a brilliant finish in stoppage time. Goa became the only team to maintain a 100% record, two games deep into the season.

Quick-fire draw

Mumbai City, hosts for the second time in a row, were confident and ready for the game as Greg Stewart quickly set up Lallianzuala Chhangte to put the hosts in the lead.

It only took four minutes and a long throw-in for Jamshedpur’s Daniel Chima Chukwu to pull it back level.

A flurry of yellow cards, three each in the remaining 80 minutes, saw the game end in a stalemate with both teams occasionally attempting to get past the opposing defence.

Hyderabad sits atop

Hyderabad FC came into this game with four points in two games, similar to Bengaluru FC, who make up half of the quadruple at the top of the table.

The set-piece specialists, Bengaluru FC were limited to only three corners on the night as Hyderabad went on to find solace in one of the nine awarded to them. A deep-driven corner parried away by Bengaluru’s Gurpreet Singh Sandhu found its way right onto Bartholomew Ogbeche’s head, who made sure the back of the net was hit. The Nigerian marksman put the hosts in the lead in the 83rd minute as Hyderabad sat unbeaten at the top of the league.

Odisha FC – Comeback Kings

As Odisha FC’s faithful prepared for their first home game in more than two years, they weren’t sure of what was in store for them.

Harmanjot Khabra, who is often known for setting a goal up rather than scoring one, put the visitors, Kerala Blasters in the lead at the 35th minute. The wing-back from Punjab sure likes visiting Odisha as he has scored both of his Hero ISL goals away against Odisha, both being headers and surprisingly just 5 minutes away on the clock.

This set up a perfect opportunity for the hosts to replicate their performance in the season opener, this time for their fans at the Kalinga Stadium.

Fan favourite, Jerry Mawihmingthanga pulled it back for the hosts in the 54th minute after a scramble in the box. With 5 minutes to go, goalkeeper Amrinder Singh’s long ball found Pedro Martín who only needed two touches, one to bring it down and one to finish it off.

Odisha FC finished yet another stellar comeback twice in three games already this season.

FT: Odisha FC 2-1 Kerala Blasters FC
