With the 2021 T20I World Cup right around the corner, we take a look at those players who could have a significant impact on the tournament even though the eyeballs won’t be on them heading into the competition. We’re talking about individuals like Shardul Thakur or Australia’s Ashton Agar, players who may necessarily not be the stars in their respective teams but are key members because of the kind of role they execute for the team.
Let’s take a look at the full list.
ASHTON AGAR (Australia)
Australia may not be the favoured team heading into the competition, but they have players like Ashton Agar who is underrated and can have a major impact on the competition. Agar is ranked sixth in the world when it comes to T20I bowling. He can bowl with the new ball in the powerplay as well as in the middle phase to restrict the run-scoring. He is quite handy with the bat as well in the lower order and can play a few valuable cameos in the competition as well.
MOHAMMAD RIZWAN (Pakistan)
Pakistan seems to be a team that not many international teams have played against with the recent cancellation of a few key series. The players have been playing in the domestic competition and have churned out a decent looking squad of players. Mohammad Rizwan, who led his team to the Pakistan Super League title, would be an important player for them in the top order.
TABRAIZ SHAMSI (South Africa)
You wouldn’t normally call the bowler ranked as the number one in the world as an underrated player but that is the case with South Africa’s Tabraiz Shamsi. He had a disappointing stint with Team Rajasthan recently when he was named as a replacement player for the 2021 Indian T20 League. He is a squad that would need him to deliver consistently especially with the conditions on offer for the World Cup.
SHIMRON HETMYER (West Indies)
West Indies’ dashing middle-order batter, Shimron Hetmyer is in dashing form coming into the 2021 T20 World Cup. He was recently named as the super striker of the 2021 Indian T20 League and such were his performances in the competition. The Windies would be hoping for a similar sort of an impact in the World Cup.
SHARDUL THAKUR (India)
Team India is packed with world-class players all around. Shardul Thakur who has recently been added to the squad is a value pick for the side as he has plenty to offer with both bat and ball. Thakur has that magic touch on things and he makes things happen. Batters often tend to go after him and it works out in his favour. He has the knack of picking crucial wickets at crunch situations and gives a perfect balance to the playing XI.
